Programme to cultivate Galda shrimp in Jamalpur

Fisheries Department will impart training to 150 fish cultivators in six upazilas of the district for increasing galda shrimp cultivation here.
District fisheries office sources said Taka 2 lakh 19 thousand was allotted for the training under the project ‘extension of shrimp in fresh water’, phase-2.
Under the programme, a total of 125 fish cultivators will get training on galda shrimp cultivation and mixed galda shrimp cultivation for four days in Sadar, Sarishabari, Melandah, Bakshiganj and Dewanganj upazilas and 25 fish cultivators on nursery management of the shrimp in Islampur upazila of the district.
The department also said a farmer can earn more profit by cultivating it in fresh water. Due to scarcity of PL (post larva) of galda shrimp a farmer could not cultivate it. After one to two month when it will be juvenile, farmers can collect juvenile of galda shrimp from the nurseries.
Fisheries officer Ranjit Kumar Paul said, the aim of the training is to increase galda shrimp cultivation in the district due to its profitable ground. He also said, one kilogram galda shrimp is sold in local market Taka 800 to 1200.
