Prof Talukder was a political visionary and activist

Academics and civil society members at a memorial meeting have termed renowned political scientist professor Talukder Maniruzzaman as a real academician. On the present national crisis, the nation can get path following his knowledge, wisdom and instructions.
They made the comments at the remembrance meeting organised by ‘Talukder Maniruzzaman Nagorik Sharon Shava Committee’ in the Jatiya Press Club on Saturday.
Speaking at the meeting, former adviser to the caretaker government Dr Akbar Ali Khan said that our relations were friendly. Teaching was his mission and vision. He was the pioneer of the explanatory political scientist in Bangladesh.
“He [Talukder Maniruzzaman] is the ideal of us,” added Akbar Ali Khan.
Former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor Emajuddin Ahmed said that Professor Talukder Maniruzzaman was by heart an educationist. He was really a helpful person. “I got numerous help from him on various issues. It was a great chance for the nation to absorb a lot of things from him.”  

Prof. Emajuddin, also an eminent political scientist, said that we wrote a lot in different issues, even each other’s opposite issues, but we had respect for each other. By following his (Maniruzzaman) path the nation can overcome many disputable issues at the national level.
Speaking on the occasion, Barrister Mainul Hosein asserted the need of courage of independence for democratic change in Bangladesh. We have no future with politics of ignorance, plundering and oppression. The people are so helpless that even the university students do not feel safe against rapists.
He expressed determination of the people for the change they must have. The change is in our hands and we shall make it happen.
Mainul explained with sadness that the politics ceased to be our politics when the Six-point Demand was discarded as the spirit of the Liberation War. Foundation of Six-point Demand was democracy, and Bangabandhu wanted to bury alive anybody who would be unfaithful to Six-point Demand. His followers buried democracy instead.
Mentioning the power of ignorance in our politics, Mainul recalled that we had many great men in the past like HS Suhrawardy, AK Fazlul Huq, Manik Mia and others who had dedicated their lives selflessly to make politics as an example of knowledge, tolerance and service to the people. They struggled to make democracy work. They are not remembered or their contributions respected as deserve for the new politics of Bangladesh.
He regretfully reminded all that in our present politics Professor Talukder’s political analysis and involvement, however important for us, is of no consequence. Because, the darkness of ignorance is bliss. But we shall need their knowledge and teachings to make politics safe and Bangladesh a happy country.
Former Dhaka University (DU) Professor Mahbub Ullah said that Professor Talukder Maniruzzaman was a visionary and wisdom person. He was soft-spoken person. He also led a simple in life.
“No one will come in Bengali society in next one century like Professor Talukder Maniruzzaman,” he added.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that person like Professor Talukder Maniruzzaman is not born usual. He was the believer of democracy and rule of law. He was also believer of freedom of the speech.
“But now any kind of opponent view is intolerable. The state mechanism oppresses if any one criticize the government. This system gave pains to Professor Maniruzzaman as he had taught us how to struggle against irregularities.
Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna said, Professor Talukder Maniruzzaman was all time concern about political issues. He had used to discuss with political leaders about various issues. He also gave advise to political activists for better democracy.
Founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury said that Bangladesh is staying far away from the professor Maniruzzaman’s thinking. He criticized the ruling Awami League government for their intolerance attitude.

Ehsanul Hoque Milan, Jahangirnagar University Professor M Salimullah Khan, Professor Dilara Chowdhury, BRAC University Professor Dr Nurul Amin, NSU Professor Mahbubur Rahman, Gono Forum Executive President Professor Abu Sayeed, Veteran Journalist Riaz Uddin Ahmed and Professor Shamsur Rahman spoke on the occasion.
