Professor Dr Syeda Sultana Razia has been appointed as a member of Scientific Advisory Board of Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
Razia, professor of Chemical Engineering Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was appointed for a three-year term effective from January 01, 2018.
Director-General of the OPCW Ahmet Uzumcu announced this at the ongoing 86th session of the executive council of the OPCW in The Hague.
Dr Syeda Sultana Razia is the first Bangladeshi national appointed as a member of Scientific Advisory Board of OPCW since its inception in 1998.
Bangladesh is an original signatory to the Chemical Weapons Convention.
Bangladesh was elected as a member of the Executive Council of the OPCW for the period 2002-2004 for the first time and again for the period 2016-2018.
The Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the OPCW Ambassador Sheikh Mohammed Belal was elected as the Chairperson of the Executive Council for the period 2017-2018.
Bangladesh was also elected as the Chair of the Credential Committee of the Conference of the States Parties of the OPCW for the year 2016 and as one of the Vice-Chairpersons of the Conference of the States Parties for the year 2017.
The Scientific Advisory Board is a subsidiary body of the OPCW which enables the Director-General of the OPCW to render specialized advice in science and technology relevant to the Chemical Weapons Convention to the Member States of the OPCW.
The board is made up of 25 independent experts from OPCW member states.
