Speakers in a function here on Sunday underscored the need for producing, using and popularizing the vermicompost fertilizer in farmers’ level to get various benefit from it.
“As the country has the mammoth population, the farmers are being compelled to farm high yield variety rice and other diversified crops in the land using wide-ranging harmful chemicals which degraded the quality of the soil”, they said.
They made the comments while addressing a field day on vermi-compost fertilizer for the farmers at the yard of one successful farmer Mina Rani at Shantiram village under Sundarganj upazila in the district on Sunday afternoon.
SKS Foundation, a local reputed voluntary organization, arranged the function under its Making Market Work for Women Project in cooperation with upazila agriculture office.
Upazila agriculture officer (UAO) Rashedul Islam attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest while union parishad member Ranju Akanda presided over the ceremony.
Sundarganj press club secretary Abdul Mannan Akanda, sub assistant agriculture officer Nurul Huda, upazila project coordinator Jamal Uddin, training, documentation and communication officer Nahid Newaz and farmer Mina Rani addressed the field day, among others.
Vermicompost, which is an excellent, nutrient-rich organic fertilizer and soil conditioner, can bring back the purity of the soil, help grow quality products and ensure better and healthy life for all, the speakers said. UAO Rashedul Islam said vermicomposting has the scope for an individual, a family and even a community to be involved in earning economical profit by which they can change their socio-economic condition gradually.
Any entrepreneurs can make the organic fertilizer themselves spending only an hour or two from their regular work and in this way, they can produce in plenty and also create a market for their product, the UAO added.
The agri-officials particularly the field level SAAOs are motivating the farmers in the upazila to make the vermicompost in larger scale to attain its cherished goals, he further added.
Earlier, the farmers coming from nearby places visited the vermicompost fertilizer plot of Mina Rani and listened to her attentively about the concept of its production.

Mina Rani also thanked the officials of SKS Foundation and agriculture office and expressed her gratefulness to them for standing beside her with the suggestion, technology and other supports.
