Police on Thursday foiled a procession towards the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) protesting the signing of contract of Rampal Power Plant Project.
The National Committee to Protect Oil-Gas-Natural Resources and Power-Port held a brief protest rally in front of the National Press Club at about 11:00am to press home for its seven-point demand, including cancellation of the signing
of a contract for implementing the Rampal Power Plant Project near the Sundarbans.
Later led by Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah and Anu Mohammad, convener and member secretary of the national committee respectively, brought out a procession towards the PMO amid police barricade.
As soon as the procession reached near Shahbagh crossing, police barricaded them. As the leaders and activists tried to break the barricade, police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse them. Police also picked up six to seven people from the spot.
Earlier on July 12, Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company (Pvt) Limited (BIFPCL) signed the agreement for Main Plant EPC (Turnkey) Package with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), India, ignoring repeated protests from green activists, environmentalists and political parties.
The experts cautioned that the climate, topography, land use pattern, wetlands, floral and faunal diversity, capture fisheries tourism and the quality of air and water – both on the surface and underground – in the Sundarbans would be badly affected permanently if the project is implemented.
