Court Correspondent :
The Special Judge Court-5 of Dhaka yesterday rejected a petition filed on behalf of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia to defer today’s proceedings of the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case anyday of next week.
Judge Dr Md Akhteruzzaman, however, exempted Khaleda Zia from her personal appearance for today. The court also extended Khaleda Zia’s bail till next date of the hearing. It will set the date after today’s proceedings of the case. Meanwhile, Khaleda Zia’s lawyer Zainul Abedin Mesba told the newsmen that she will appear before the court today as it rejected her petition to defer today’s proceedings.
Earlier, on Wednesday, Sanaullah Mia, another lawyer of Khaleda Zia, appealed to the court that Thursday’s proceedings should be deferred as today (Thursday) is the death anniversary of the BNP Chief.
Public Prosecutor Mosharraf did not oppose the petition likely on humanitarian ground while the judge of the special court exempted Khaleda Zia from the proceedings scheduled to be held today. However, he asked the defence lawyers of other accused to place their argument today.
On Wednesday, defence counsel for Sharfuddin Ahmed, Ahsan Ullah placed arguments and will resume his submission today.
