Brokers are cheating patients, fallen garbage here and there, and inactive fans and lights are creating untold sufferings to patients at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city.
“When I was trying to take a ticket for outdoor treatment, a man came to me and tried to misguide me about the ticket counter. He also tried to convince me to drive towards a nearby clinic instead this hospital,” said Atiqul Islam, a relative of a patient in front of the institute.
He said the brokers are doing nothing but making the patients seriously tired.
The other patients and their attendances also alleged about the dirty environment and inactive fans and lights in the cardiac institute.
When contacted, Professor Dr. MD. Afzalur Rahman, Director, National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, told The New Nation on Tuesday that, “We must take action against the brokers.”
He also acknowledged the problems of inactive fans and light saying, “Some development works are going in the hospital. So, these are the temporary problems.”
He also said garbage remains such places where the cleaners are unable to reach physically. “We must search alternative ways to make all places of the institute clean.”
The director also said there are 400 beds in the hospital but we are indeed giving treatment to about 1000 patients, which made different problems.
On the spot it was found on Monday, three persons talking unnecessarily with outdoor patients’ ticket seekers in the ground floor. They are trying to convince them to drive away to some certain clinics or chambers of some physicians out side of the hospital.
The on duty security men are found sitting idle in the gates close to the ticket counters ignoring the cheating activities of those brokers.
But when their attention was drawn to the matter, they drove them away. After few minutes, the brokers came back and started the same act again.
When this correspondent started to talk with one of the brokers then the security men drove them again. They also confined one of them in a room. But the attitude of both parties was found to be friendly.
The activities of the security men with the brokers were like hide and seek game.
Apart from these, the problem of throwing garbage here and there makes the environment partially dirty. Most areas of the institute are clean but the side of stairs and every side-portions of the hospital building are found dirty.
“You look, the front side of the VIP cabin of the institute is so dirty. Old and dirty beverage drinks’ bottles, packets full with rotten puffed rice (Jhal muri) and other garbage made the environment toxics. How is it possible before the doorstep of the VIP cabin? But it is here,” said Sadiq Ahsan, a relative of a patient there.
He said this pointing to a view of wastage close to vast outer plants of central air conditioners.
The director of the institute said, the outer plants of ACs are planted in isolated areas. It is technical problem. We are searching alternative ways to clean it.
The cleaners were found busy to clean the balcony and all passages but ignoring that garbage closes to outer plants of AC and alongside the stairs.
Besides these, the inactive fans and lights added further sufferings to the patients.
There was about 10 patience taking treatment in balcony outside the Cardiology Ward number 6 at third floor.
After inquiry it was found that they were admitted to bed in the Cardiology Ward number 6. As there was no sufficient condition to stay there, they were being given treatment at the balcony. “There are unbearable hot as well as very dark in the ward. So, our patient has preferred to take treatment in the open balcony,” said, Nazmeen Sajeeda, one attendance of a patient there.
Replying to a query, she said there are sufficient number of fans and lights but most of them are inactive causing untold sufferings to the patients.
