Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum (JAF), a body of pro-BNP lawyers, on Thursday demanded cancellation of Bangladesh Bar Council election which was held on May 14.
Bringing allegations of irregularities and corruption in the election, they also called upon the authorities concerned for holding a fresh election in the statutory body regulating the country’s lawyers.
“We are strongly demanding immediate investigation into corruption taking place in the Bar Council election and punishment of the persons
involved in corruption. We are also demanding resignation of the Election Commissioner and the Attorney General for the unprecedented corruption,” JAF Secretary General Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokan said.
He was speaking at a press conference organised by JAF in the Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium.
Barrister Mahbub Uddin said many non-lawyers cast votes while the original lawyers could not exercise their voting rights during the polling at Dhaka Bar Association as the election officials allowed to them to cast vote without checking their identity cards.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, Advocate S M Rezaul Karim, Law Secretary of ruling Awami League, in another press conference at the same place, refuted the allegations of the JAF. He said the election to Bangladesh Bar Council was held strictly following the relevant laws and rules, and there were no irregularities or corruption in the election.
Pro-BNP lawyers brought the allegation of irregularities and corruption to save their face from shame of defeat in the Bar Council and Khulna City Corporation elections, he added.
