The teachers of Dhaka University (DU) at a human-chain urged the government cancelling the Rampal Coal based Power Plant project near Sundarbans.

Professor Sirajul Haque chaired the rally, while former Arts Faculty Dean Professor Sadrul Amin, Professor Sukomol Borua, Professor Hasan Talukder, Professor Akhter Hossain Khan, Professor ABM Obaidul Islam and Professor Layla Noor Islam spoke. White Panel Joint-Convener Siddiqur Rahman Khan conducted the rally.
Sirajul Haque said we do not refuse the demand of electricity andthere is no alternative way solving the demand without establishing Power Plant. On the other hand there is only one Sundarbans in the world and it has no alternative. But Power Plant has alternative.
“So we urge the government cancelling the Rampal Coal based Power Plant considering the interest of nation,” he added.
He said the government should establish the Power Plant where the threat of environment pollution is less. Siddiqur Rahman Khan said to protect the biodiversity of Sundarbans is the constitutional responsibility of the government.
He urged the government to retreat the project considering the opinion of UNESCO and other national and international organizations.
