The Supreme Court premises on Tuesday was abuzz with slogans and processions of pro-BNP and the pro-Awami League lawyers over the post of the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
The lawyers of the two sections were in a face to face position during their processions in front of the SCBA’s president room.
Sources said, Attorney General AM Amin Uddin who was earlier declared president of the SCBA by the ruling party supported lawyers came to the president’s room at 11.00am yesterday (Tuesday). The pro-Awami League lawyers were already there to welcome him. After staying about one hour, the Attorney General left the room. Being informed of the position of the attorney general, the pro-BNP lawyers gathered in front of the president’s room and started a demonstration. The lawyers who attended the programme urged the Supreme Court Bar Association’s leaders to declare an election schedule immediately for electing a president of the bar.
On the other hand the pro-Awami lawyers who were present there also started counter demonstration in front of the president room. The situation continued more than one hour.
In a reaction Advocate AM Amin Uddin said, “A dirty game has begun for the post of the SCBA’s president. I totally hate this kind of game. Earlier I did some development works of the bar as its president.”
The pro-Awami League part of the Supreme Court lawyers on May 4 this year in a meeting declared Advocate AM Amin Uddin who is also the Attorney General of the State as the president of the SCBA. They have claimed that AM Amin Uddin has become the president by voice vote in the special general meeting of the association.
But pro-BNP lawyers of the SCBA executive committee including its secretary Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal opposed the decision. A press note signed by Ruhul Quddus Kazal said that the special general meeting had been adjourned until the next announcement.
The post became vacant after the death of the elected president Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru on April 14 this year.
