The pro-Awami League and left leaning ‘Blue Panel’ swept the Syndicate, Academic Council and Finance Committee elections held on Thursday at Dhaka University (DU).
The panel won 11 out of the 13 (Syndicate six, Academic six and Finance Committee one) to post a crushing defeat on the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islam backed panel. About 90 percent voters exercised their franchise.
The BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami-leaning teachers’ ‘White Panel’ won two posts only.
The polls were held at the university’s Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban from 9am to 1pm yesterday (Thursday). The results were announced by Treasurer and Election Commissioner Kamal Uddin Ahmed. He said 1,289 voters out of 1,419 cast their votes.
The Blue Panel was elected to four out of six for the Syndicate’s teacher representation.
The head of the Department of Earth and Environmental Science ASM Maksud Kamal has been elected in the dean category and Farid Uddin Ahmed of Economics won in the category for professors.
The Blue Panel’s Chandra Nath Podder from Mathematics and Neelima Akhter from English have won in the categories for associate professor and assistant professor respectively.
White Panel candidates – Md Lutfor Rahman, Provost of Sir PJ Hartog International Hall, and Afrin Chowdhury, Lecturer of Marketing, have been elected to the remaining two posts. Meanwhile, pro-government teachers have taken all the six posts in the Academic Council.
Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed told The New Nation that the Blue Panel had been working to make the university a world standard institution. It also has been working in the interest of the teachers and the students of the university. That is why the teachers backed the blue panel, Professor Farid claimed.
