Pro-AL Blue panel sweeps DUTA polls

The pro-Awami League Blue Panel has swept the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) election bagging 14 out of 15 executive committee posts, including all five key positions.
The Blue Panel’s ASM Maksud Kamal, Professor of Disaster Science and Management Department, became President, beating pro-BNP White Panel’s Akhter Hossain Khan, Professor of Soil Water and Environment Department.
Professor Kamal bagged 1036 votes, while his rival Professor Akhter Hossain Khan, secured 453 votes.
Meanwhile, Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam, Professor of Banking and Insurance Department was elected General Secretary. His rival was White Panel’s Luthfor Rahman, Professor of International Business Department.
Professor Luthfor Rahman garnered 689 votes, while elected Professor Shibli earned 805 votes.
Professor Hasanuzzaman of Computer Science and Engineering Department was the only person to have been elected member of the executive committee of DUTA from the white panel.
DUTA election commissioner Dr. Tofail Ahmed Chowdhury of the Chemistry Department, conducted the election, announced the results on Tuesday at around 4:40 pm.
A total of 1550 teachers out of 1988 cast their votes beginning from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the Dhaka University (DU) Teachers’ Club.
Professor Imdadul Huq was elected DUTA Vice-President, Professor Momotajuddin Ahmed as Treasurer, and Professor Tazin Aziz Chowdhury as Joint Secretary.
Professor Chandranath Poddar, Professor Zeenat Huda, Professor Nisar Hossain, Professor Aftab Ali Sheikh, Professor Ziaur Rahman, Professor Nizamul Huq Bhuiyan, Professor Sadeka Halim, Professor Sabita Rizwana Rahman and Professor Soumitra Sekhar were the others elected to the executive committee as Executive Members from ruling Awami League backed Blue Panel.
