Prizes of the Berger Paints 40th National Chess Championship were handed over on Wednesday afternoon at a function at the Dutch-Bangla Auditorium of Bangladesh Olympic Association in the city.
General Manager of the meet’s sponsor Berger Paints Bangladesh Ltd M Mohsin Habib Chowdhury distributed the prizes as chief guest at the ceremony, chaired by acting President of Bangladesh Chess Federation Syed Shahabuddin Shamim.
National Sports Council director (sports) Narayan Chandra Devnath , Chess Federation general secretary Gazi Shayiful Tarique, Tournament Committee chairman KM Shahidullah, member secretary Mujibur Rahman Hawlader and Grand Master Niaz Murshed spoke on the occasion.
Prize money of Tk 60,000 were distributed among the top six players of the national meet.
Grand Master Ziaur Rahman, who clinched the national chess title for a record 13 times becoming unbeaten champion this time, received prize money of Tk 25,000 while the country’s first Grand Master Niaz Murshed got Tk 15,000 as runner-up.
The 3rd and 4th finishers GM Enamul Hossain Razib and GM Abdullah Al Rakib received Tk 7,500 each while the 5th and 6th placed IM Minhazuddin Ahmed Sagar and FM Sheikh Nasir Ahmed respectively got Tk 2,500 each.
