Sylhet Bureau :
Sylhet police said that they were still in the dark regarding the whereabouts of suspended Sub-Inspector Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, prime suspect in the case of torturing Raihan Ahmed to death at Bandar Bazar outpost of Kotwali police on October 11, even after 17 days of the custodial death.
Police Bureau of Investigation Inspector Mohidul Islam, also investigation officer of the case, said that Akbar could not be located so far.
We are trying our best to arrest the outposts suspended in-charge Akbar, but his whereabouts could not be ascertained, Mohidul said.
Responding to a question, he said that they could not take a guess at this stage whether Akbar had left the country or not.
The police claimed that Raihan, 35, compounder at a doctor’s chamber at Stadium Market and son of late Rafiqul Islam of Neharipara at Akhalia area in the city, had died following mob beating in the city’s Kastaghar on October 11, early morning, while he was trying to snatch money from a pedestrian.
But Rayhan’s family complained later that he was tortured to death by the police after they failed to realise Tk 10,000 from him as a bribe.
His widow Tahmina Akter Tanni also filed a case in this regard with the Kotwali police on October 12.
Since then, the family members of Raihan, his relatives and neighbours have continued their protest in the killing incident, demanding immediate steps to arrest the police personnel involved in torturing Raihan to death.
