Rajon murder: Prime accused Kamrul brought back from KSA

Joynal Abedin Khan :Kamrul Islam, the prime accused in Samiul Alam Rajon murder case, brought back to Dhaka from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) on Thursday.”A three-member team of police along with Kamrul arrived at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka from Saudi Arabia by a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines at around 3:00pm,” said Alamgir Shimul, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Armed Police Battalion (APBn).Kamrul was taken to Sylhet from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport instantly as he will be produced before a court there on Friday (today).”Police will produce Kamrul in a Sylhet court on Friday, said Nazrul Islam, Assistant Inspector General of Police Headquarter (Media and Public Relation). “Police are also investigating to know how he (Kamrul) had left the country,” the AIG said.”As there is no repatriation of prisoners agreement with Saudi Arabia, absconding accused Kamrul has been brought back through the INTERPOL. About 10 absconding accused, including Kamrul, have so far brought back to Bangladesh from abroad,” he said.When asked about the alleged involvement of police officers in helping Kamrul to flee the country, the AIG said, “An inquiry has already conducted in this regard. The responsible police officers have already been suspended and action will be taken against them.”On Monday, the police team headed by Mahbubul Karim, Additional Superintendent of Police Headquarters, flew for the KSA. Two other members of the team are: Md Rahmatullah, Additional Deputy Commissioner (media) and AFM Nizam Uddin, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.Earlier, Kamrul was detained by some Bangladeshis in Saudi Arabia and handed over him to the police on July 13. In this backdrop, the Saudi Interior Ministry earlier approved the extradition of Kamrul to Bangladesh. The National Central Bureau (NCB) of the Police Headquarters on July 21 issued a red notice against absconding Kamrul through the Interpol after officially being sure that he was arrested in Riyadh. The police also started a massive hunt to nab two of his brothers – Shamim and Pavel – who are also on the run.Ten others accused in the case are now in police custody. Eight of them have given confessional statements admitting the murder.”A case was registered in this connection against 13 people, including Kamrul. “With the arrest of Kamrul, eleven people have been arrested in the murder case. Now police are trying to arrest two other absconding accused. We’re hopeful that they will be arrested soon,” AIG Nazrul said.On July 8, 13-year old Samiul Alam Rajon was beaten to death in Sylhet’s Kumargaon by some unscrupulous men over stealing a rickshaw van at Sundar Ali Market in Kumargaon area of the Sylhet city. One of the killers recorded the incident on mobile phone and later uploaded on Facebook. Apart from Kamrul, the other accused are Muhit Alam, 32, Shamim Alam, 20, Pavel Islam, 18, Ali Haider alias Ali, 34, Moyna Mia, 45, Nur Ahmed alias Nuru Mia, 20, Dulal Ahmed, 30, Ayaz Ali, 45, Taz Uddin Badal, 28, Firoz Mia, 50, Asmat Ali, 42, and Ruhul Amin, 25.The video soon spread on social media platforms, triggering massive outrage among the public. The 28-minute video shows the victim tied to a pole in front of a workshop in the still-closed Sultan Ali Market, beside the Dhaka-Sunamganj road.Meanwhile, the police submitted a chargesheet naming 13 persons on August 16. A Sylhet court has already accepted charges against the accused and issued arrest warrants against the fugitives in the lawsuit.
