Just before Ramzan, prices of goods across the country skyrocketed, making it difficult for many people to afford of their daily essentials. This is not true that the prices of goods have increased due to lower supply than demand.
There is enough supply of essentials in the city markets, including vegetables, meat, edible oil, sugar and onion-garlic. Price of these goods have risen 10 to 40 percent in recent days. The price is not hiked in Dhaka only, all other districts also affected by the recent price hiking.
On Wednesday night, due to excess supply prices of brinjal decreased at Karwan Bazar. The traders stored brinjal to keep its price upward in the market.
But in the retail market on Friday, the price of per kilogram of brinjal rose to Tk 80-100, which was Tk 50 a week ago. Similarly, the price of local cucumber increased to Tk 70 per kg from Tk 35 a week ago, lemon price increased to Tk 40 per hali (four pieces). On the other hand, the green chillies were selling at Tk 25 to 30 per kg in Karwan Bazar which has jumped to Tk 70 to 80 on Friday.2
Beef and broiler chicken prices have increased by Tk 50 and Tk 20 respectively. Though Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has fixed Tk 450 per kg of beef for the Ramzan month, but retailers are selling meat at Tk 500 per kg, which is Tk 20 more than the price of few days ago. Broiler chicken rose to Tk 20 per kg and it was selling at Tk 170 on Friday.
When asked about city corporation’s fixed price, the traders said that they did not buy meat from the city corporation.
However, visiting different city markets this reporter observed that green chilli was selling at Tk 70 to 80 per kg, brinjal at Tk 80 to 100, potato at Tk 25, okra at Tk 60 to 70, parble at Tk 60, arum at Tk 80, snake gourd at Tk 50 to 60, french beans at Tk 70, balsam apple at Tk 80, teasel gourd at Tk 80, carrot at Tk 60 to 80, bitter gourd at Tk 60, cucumber at Tk 60 to 70, green papaya at Tk 50 to 60, pumpkin (medium size) at Tk 70 to 90 per piece, bottle gourd at Tk 50 to 60, ash gourd at Tk 35 to 40 per piece, cauliflower at Tk 40 to 50, coriander leaves at Tk 300 per kg, capsicum (red) at Tk 450 per kg and capsicum (green) at Tk 350.
Of fishes, butter fish was selling at Tk 400 to 550 per kg, lobster at Tk 550 to 600, shrimp (River) at Tk 500 to 600, puti at Tk 300 to 400 per kg, cultivated koi at Tk 180 to 250, Fali Chanda (Rupchanda) at Tk 1000 to 1100, eel at Tk 600 to 800, batashi at Tk 400 to 500, Aire fish at Tk 500 to 700, baila at Tk 650 to 700, coral fish at Tk 450 to 600, river Pangas at Tk 350, cultivated pangas at Tk 140, rajputi at Tk 400 and telapia at Tk 200 to Tk 250 per kg.
The white broiler chicken was selling at Tk 160 to Tk 175 per kg. Mother chicken was selling at Tk 180 to 200 per kg, the sonali cock (Pakistani origin) at Tk 180 to 250 per piece. Local (deshi) chicken weighing 800 gm to 900 gm was selling at Tk 350 to 500 per piece.
Beef was selling at Tk 500-Tk 540 per kg and red meat (goat) at Tk 750 to 800 per kg.
Fine quality of packet salt was selling at Tk 44 a kg, while the refined one at Tk 28 per kg in the city markets.
Of rice superior quality of Nazirshail was selling at Tk 65 to 70 per kg, Miniete at Tk 62 to 68 per kg, medium quality of Bridhan-28 and Lata rice were selling at Tk 55-58 per kg. Different kinds of coarse rice like Swarna were selling at Tk 55 and similarly the hybrid quality at Tk 50 to Tk 56 to 58 per kg.
