The prices of onion, garlic, ginger, check pea, lentil and sugar have risen by Tk 10 to 45 per kg in the local markets ahead of the holy month of Ramadan despite adequate supply of these items here. Thus. The both wholesalers and retailers are making additional profits in view of advance storing of Ramadan food items.
There were adequate supply of vegetables in the city’s wholesale and retail markets at the weekend on Friday, but the edible oil and rice prices have remained stable.
According to Ministry of Commerce, annual domestic demand for onion is 22.00 lakh tonnes of which 17.04 lakh tonnes are produced in the country. The shortfall will be imported from India. As for price, local onion was selling at 45 per kg and imported one at Tk 25 to 38.
Annual demand for garlic is about five lakh tonnes of which 4.15 lakh tonnes are produced at home and the shortfall is imported. The price of garlic has remained higher in the global markets. Local garlic was selling at Tk120 to 140 on Friday but the imported garlic at Tk 230 t0 250 per kg.
Annual local demand of ginger is three lakh tonnes of which 2.15 are produced at home and the shortfall will be met by import from different countries. Ginger was selling at Tk70 to 130 per.
Of vegetables, Teasle gourd was selling at Tk 70 per kg, potato at Tk 18 to 22 , tomato at Tk 40 to 45, brinjal at Tk 40 to 50, green chilli at Tk 50 to 60, french at Tk 40 to 45, carrot at Tk 35, bitter gourd at Tk 30 to Tk 35, moringa oleifera (sajna data) at Tk 80, spiny gourd at Tk 70 per kg, cucumber at Tk 25 to 30, spone gourd at Tk 45 to 50, arum at 45 to 50, papaya at Tk 50, pumpkin (medium size) at Tk 30 to 45 per piece, broccoli at 35 to 40, bottle gourd at Tk 30 to 40, ash gourd at Tk 25 to 30 piece, coriander leaves at Tk 200 kg, capsicum (red) at Tk 300 kg and capsicum (green) at Tk 250 to 300 kg.
Beef price rose by Tk25 per kg in the city in a week and it was selling for Tk 440 to 460 per kg at Hatipul and the red meat at Tk 550 to 600. Its price was Tk 280-300 at the beginning of the year.
The price hike of beef has pushed up prices of other meat too. In the beginning of the year, broiler chicken was sold at Tk 130 per kg, which now sells at Tk 160 to 165. Mutton price has shot up too. Earlier this year, a kilogram of mutton was Tk 450. Now it is Tk 550 to Tk 600.
The egg (farm) was selling at Tk 35 per hali (four pieces), egg (local) at Tk 50 and egg (duck) at Tk 45 to Tk 48. Pigeon (per pair) was selling at Tk 180 to Tk 250 and four koil birds at Tk 200 only.
Of the fishes, Sheat (boal) at Tk 350 to 800 kg, Ek-thota (Kaitta fish) at Tk 350 to Tk 400, Baila at Tk 400 to 600 kg, Coral Fish at Tk 550 kg, river Pangas at Tk 300 kg, cultivated Pangas at Tk 130 kg, Rajputi at Tk 300 kg, Tilapia at Tk 140 to Tk 200 kg, Ruhit at Tk 250 to Tk 350 kg, medium size carp (katol) at Tk 230 -260 a kg, big size katol at Tk 300 kg, local variety of Cat fish (Shing) at Tk 400-500 a kg, barbel at Tk 600 to 800 per kg, butter fish at Tk 500 to 700, lobster at Tk 500 to 700 kg, shrimp (River) at Tk 350-400 kg, Puti at Tk 250 per kg, puti (live) at Tk 350 kg, Kholisa at Tk 250, Chapila at Tk 400, cultivated koi at Tk 200 to 220 per kg and koi (river) at Tk 600, Fali Chanda (Rupchada) at Tk 1100 kg, Chanda (small) at Tk 200 kg, walking fish (Shoal) at Tk 300 kg and Eel at Tk 300 to 600 kg,
Two pieces of Hilsha weighing about 700 grams were selling at Tk 1,000 at Karwan Bazar, dry fish at Tk 500 per kg, Mola at Tk700, kachki at Tk 600, and river shrimp at Tk 700 per kg.
About scarcity of fish in the markets, experts say that many rivers, water bodies, lakes and ponds have dried due to adverse impact of the Farakka Barrage built on the Indian part of the river Padma. If Bangladesh gets its due share as per treaty signed between the two countries, the fish production may go up.
Five liters of Rupchanda brand canned soybean oil was selling at Tk 485, Rupchanda (two litres) at Tk 188, and loose super palm oil at 78 per liter, sugar price at Tk 58 to 65 per kg and molasses at Tk 70 to 120 and flattened rice at Tk 70 to 90, the red lentil at Tk 130 per kg, while the imported lentil at Tk 115 kg and mash at 110 per kg.
The coarse rice was selling at Tk 32 to 34 per kg, Pyjam at Tk 40 to 42 kg, Nazirshail brand of rice at Tk 44 to 52 kg, Minicate at Tk 44 to 50 kg, Kattari bhog at Tk 75, Pillau rice (Badsha bhog) at Tk 90 to 120 kg and Kalijira at Tk 115 to 130 kg only. Coarse flour was selling at Tk40 per kg and a 2-kg packet at Tk 75.
Green mango was selling at Tk 40 to 120 per kg, pineapple at Tk 20 to 40 per piece, watermelon at Tk150 to 350 as per piece and guava at Tk 80 to 120 per kg.
