Prices of rice, onion, potato, edible oil continue to soar

The prices of rice, onion, potato and edible oil have gone up again this week in the city’s kitchen markets illogically, although the prices of winter vegetables come down.
Consumers are paying extra money to buy daily essential commodities amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
The price of new potatoes has gone up in the city’s kitchen markets in a few days. This year, after the onion, the price of potato has been increasing rapidly. Potato prices are also fixed at all levels to prevent the tendency but the effort is yet to be impact on the markets.
The new potatoes were selling at Tk 60 per Kg and old potato at Tk 40-45 per Kg. Consumers, however, are buying new potatoes. Traders said the potato harvesting has decreased in heavy winter and foggy weather. So, the supply in the market is a bit low. However, the price will come down again quickly.
On the other hand, the locally produced onions were retailing at Tk 70 per Kg, imported onions at Tk 30-40 per Kg blaming the shortage of supply in the markets.
Unpackaged soya bean oil was selling at Tk 104-105 a litre and palm oil at Tk 92-98 a litre. The price of a one-litre bottled soya bean oil increased by up to Tk 10 a litre and selling at Tk 110-120 while five litres of packaged soya bean oil selling at Tk 550 on Friday.
Traders said that the price of soya oil and palm oil is currently at the highest level in the country and there is a possibility of further rise in prices in the coming days due to costlier imports from abroad.
The prices of rice have increased further this week. 50 kg sacks of high quality Miniket rice were selling at Tk 3,150-3,200.
Miniket and Nazirshal rice were selling at Tk 62-68 per Kg which were Tk 57-62 per Kg in the previous week. BR-28 was selling at Tk 55-56, Swarna at Tk 50-52 in the retail markets. Wholesalers alleged that the millers are increasing the rice price in almost every week ignoring the rate fixed by the government.
Besides, the winter vegetables like been were selling at Tk 25-30 per Kg, cauliflower at Tk 20-25 per piece, eggplant at Tk 40-50 per Kg, tomato at Tk 100 per Kg, carrot at Tk 60 per Kg and green chilli at Tk 100 per Kg in the city’s kitchen markets on Friday.
