The prices of fish, rice, soybean and sugar showed upward trend, but that of other essential commodities remained stable in the city’s kitchen markets at the weekend on Friday.
As a result, the people of the fixed income group are bearing additional expenditures, paying increased house rent and utility bills. The consumers’ right group criticizing the government said, the traders are raising the price taking advantage of the government’s apathy.
The price of rice increased by Tk two to three per kg. Coarse rice of Swarna and BR-11 increased to Tk 40 per kg at retail markets in the last five days.
Finer varieties like Miniket and Jeerashail were selling at Tk 46 to Tk 54 per kg, Najirshail at Tk 52 to Tk 58, Kataribhog (boiled) at Tk 68 to Tk 72 per kg, medium quality Paijam at Tk 44 to 45 and Brridhan-28 at Tk 42 to Tk 44 per kg.
Rice trader Abdur Razzak said at Karwan Bazar, Swarna costs Tk 1,780 a sack on Wednesday, which was Tk 1,700 to Tk 1,720 five days ago. Super Miniket was selling at Tk 2,340 to 2,350 a sack, compared with Tk 2,250 to Tk 2,260 a week ago.
Sources said, Swarna was selling at Tk 32 to Tk 33 a kg and Miniket at Tk 44 to Tk 48 a kg in Kushtia, Naogaon, Jaypurhat, Pabna, Rangpur, Dinajpur and Nilphamari, according to Bangladesh Auto-Major Husking Mill Owners Association.
The price of bottled soybean increased by Tk five to Tk seven per litre in the last two weeks, according to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).
In line with bottled oil, prices of loose soybean also increased by Tk two per litre.
Loose soybean was selling at Tk 92 to Tk 94 per litre at retail, grocers said.
Branded soybean of five litres can increased to Tk 500 to Tk 530 while one litre to Tk 105 toTk 107 recently as refiners introduced new price amid global price hike.
Rupchanda, a brand of Bangladesh Edible Oil Ltd (BOEL) was selling at Tk 107 (1 litre), Tk 212 (2 litre) and Tk 530 (five litres), which was Tk 102, Tk 200 and Tk 500 respectively. Teer and Fresh branded oil, products of City Group and Meghna Group respectively, were selling at Tk 105 a litre.
Of the vegetables, brinjal was selling at Tk 35 to 50 per kg, bean at Tk 35 to 45, tomato at Tk 35 to 45, potato at Tk 10 to 18, carrot at Tk 30 to 35, bitter gourd at Tk 60 to 70, cucumber at Tk 30, khira at Tk 20 to 25, spone gourd at Tk 90 to 100, turnip at Tk 20 to 25, green pea at Tk 50 to 60, beat at Tk 70, papaya at Tk 25 to 30, french at Tk 60 to 70, snake gourd at Tk 60 to 70, okra at Tk 70, radish at Tk 20, pumpkin (medium size) at Tk 30 to 50 per piece, tomato at Tk 30 to 35, lemon per piece at Tk 5, bottle gourd at Tk 30 to 45, ash gourd at Tk 20 to 35 per piece, cabbage at Tk 15 to 25, cauliflower at 25 to 30 per piece, coriander leaves at Tk 120 per kg, green chilli at 40 to 50 kg, onion flower Tk 20 per kilo, capsicum (red) at Tk 300 per kg and capsicum (green) at Tk 250 to 260 per kg and spinach Tk five per bundle.

Chicken (local cock) was selling at Tk 370 per kg, local (hen) at Tk 350, broiler chicken at Tk 150 to 155 per kg, chicken (Pakistani species) at Tk 150 to 180 per piece of 600 to 700gm.
The price of garlic has decreased slightly. Imported garlic was selling at Tk 200 to 210, while the local variety at Tk 180-Tk 190. newly harvested garlic was selling on Friday at Tk 140 to 150 per kg, onion at Tk 25 per kg and imported Indian onion at Tk 19 per kg. Lentil was selling at Tk 100 to 155 per kg based on quality at retail markets.
