People in low, middle and fixed income brackets are feeling the pinch of a fresh hike in the prices of rice, onion, garlic and other essentials in Sylhet area.
Rice became dearer again in the district and city markets while the prices of onion garlic, green chilli and other vegetables also increased in retail markets this week. Prices of most essentials increased as unscrupulous traders and hoarders are manipulating the prices in the kitchen markets ahead of Ramadan, consumers alleged.
Prices of medium and finer quality rice have soared by Tk 1-2 per kg both in wholesale and retail markets in the Sylhet while coarse variety rice witnessed a small rise at the wholesale level.
Miniket and Najirshail rice were selling at Tk 52 to Tk 62 a kg while medium quality Brridhan-28, Paijam, Lota and Parija were retailing at Tk 45 to Tk 50 a kg in the capital on Friday.
Price of coarse variety Swarna was static at Tk 41-43 per kg in the retail markets for the last seven days.
Imported garlic price witnessed a 12 percent hike, while prices of vegetables, onion, chilli and chickpea also rose by 5 to 10 percent. Imported garlic price shot up to Tk 210-230 a kg in the kitchen markets from Tk 190-210 a kg.
Onion price also soared to Tk 32-35 a kg in the capital from Tk 25 a kg.
Ali Akbar the owner of a grocery store of Bandor Bazar said they have to adjust the prices with the changes in the wholesale markets.
On the other hand, over 8.5 lakh families have been affected and crops on some 219,840 hectares of land damaged by flashfloods in six haor districts of Sylhet division. Government allocated Tk 27cr for flood victims in haor area.
Joint secretary of the disaster management and relief ministry Md Mohsin told the reporters on Friday.
The people of haor areas have been facing troubles as their croplands have gone under water.
They are crying for relief as their Boro paddy and fish started to perish in the floodwaters. Prolonged rain, onrush of upstream water triggered flashfloods, inundating haors and low-lying areas of the northeastern region.
Thousands of farmers were hit hard by flooding when they were getting ready to reap a good harvest.
Most farmers of Kishoreganj, Netrakona, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Sylhet are facing crisis due to the flooding, A total of 2,860 houses were totally destroyed while 15,345 houses partially damaged by floods. A total of 213.95 tonnes fish, 3,902 ducks and four buffalos died due to the floods, it said.
The government declared that they will provide 30 kg of rice and Tk 500 cash every month for each of flood- affected families in six haor areas until 31 July.
They distributed rice, tins and cash to 3, 30,000 families since Friday, according to the ministry.
However, the flood victims are suffering for acute shortages of food and pure drinking water as the floodwaters started to recede. They are in want of relief.
Many alleged that the governments relief is yet to reach them.
They were seen running after different points of open market sales (OMS) in the haor areas to buy rice and wheat at Tk 15 and 17 a kg.
Under the circumstances, the people are now leaving their village homes for towns to manage jobs. Already The government has so far allocated Tk 271.05 crore for providing relief materials for the flood victims in the countrys haor areas including Sylhet Division.
Around 850,088 families at 518 unions under 62 upazilas in Sunamganj, Sylhet, Netrakona, Kishoreganj, Habiganj and Moulvibazar districts were affected by flood since March 29 last.
Besides, Boro crops on 219,840 hectares of land were fully damaged while 18,205 houses damaged either fully or partially by the flood caused by excessive rainfalls and onrush of water from hills in the six districts.
Of the allocation, 3,924 tonnes of GR rice and Tk 2.19 crore in cash are being distributed among the victims as humanitarian assistance.
