Anisul Islam Noor :The price of vegetables at retail level is almost double of the price at the wholesale level in Dhaka and main cities of the country.The onion, garlic, ginger, beef, fish and lentil price have increased by Tk two to 25 per kg, while that of the vegetables remained stable at the weekend on Friday.Beef price rose by Tk25 per kg in the city in a week and it was selling for Tk 440 to 460 per kg at Hatirpul and the red meat at Tk 550 to 600. Its price was Tk 280-300 at the beginning of the year.The price hike of beef has pushed up prices of other meat too. At the start of the year, broiler chicken was sold at Tk 130 per kg, which now sells at Tk 160 to 165.Mutton price has shot up, too. Earlier this year, a kilogram of mutton was Tk 450. Now it is Tk 550 to Tk 600.According to the meat traders association, supply of cows from neighbouring India has fallen drastically. Traders fear if this continues, prices will rise further. There are around 600 meat shops in the capital.The egg (farm) was selling at Tk 35 per hali (four pieces), egg (local) at Tk 50 and egg (duck) at Tk 45 to Tk 48. Pigeon (per pair) was selling at Tk 180 to Tk 250 and four koil birds at Tk 200 only.Of the fishes, Sheat (boal) at Tk 350 to 800 kg, Ek-thotta (Kaitta fish) at Tk 350 to Tk 400, Baila at Tk 400 to 600 kg, Coral Fish at Tk 550 kg, river Pangas at Tk 300 kg, cultivated Pangas at Tk 130 kg, Rajputi at Tk 300 kg, Tilapia at Tk 140 to Tk 200 kg, Ruhit at Tk 250 to Tk 350 kg, medium size carp (katol) at Tk 230 -260 a kg, big size katol at Tk 300 kg, local variety of Cat fish (Shing) at Tk 400-500 a kg, barbel at Tk 600 to 800 per kg, butter fish at Tk 500 to 700, lobster at Tk 500 to 700 kg, shrimp (River) at Tk 350-400 kg, Puti at Tk 250 per kg, puti (live) at Tk 350 kg, Kholisa at Tk 250, Chapila at Tk 400, cultivated koi at Tk 200 to 220 per kg and koi(river) at Tk 600, Fali Chanda (Rupchada) at Tk 1100 kg, Chanda (small) at Tk 200 kg, walking fish (Shoal) at Tk 300 kg and Eel at Tk 300 to 600 kg, Two pieces of Hilsha weighing about 700 grams were selling at Tk1000 at Karwan Bazar, dry fish (loitta) at Tk 500 per kg, Mola at Tk700, kachki at Tk 600 and river shrimp at Tk 700 per kg. About scarcity of fish in the markets, experts say that many rivers, water bodies, lakes and ponds have dried due to adverse impact of the Farakka Barrage on the Indian part of the river Padma. If Bangladesh gets its due share as per treaty signed between the two countries, the fish production may go up.Of vegetables, Teasle gourd was selling at Tk 70 per kg, potato at Tk 18 to 22 , tomato at Tk 40 to 45, brinjal at Tk40 to 50, green chilli at Tk 50 to 60, french at Tk 40 to 45, carrot at Tk 35 , bitter gourd at Tk 30 to Tk 35, moringa oleifera (sajna data) at Tk 80, spiny gourd at Tk 70 per kg, cucumber at Tk 25 to 30, spone gourd at Tk 45 to 50, arum at 45 to 50, papaya at Tk 50, pumpkin (medium size) at Tk 30 to 45 per piece, broccoli at 35 to 40, bottle gourd at Tk 30 to 40, ash gourd at Tk 25 to 30 piece, coriander leaves at Tk 200 kg, capsicum (red) at Tk 300 kg and capsicum (green) at Tk 250 to 300 kg. Imported garlic was selling at Tk 220, local garlic at Tk 150 to 160 per kg, garlic (single cell) at Tk 190, imported ginger at Tk 90 to 100 per kg, and while the locally produced ginger at Tk 90 to 110 kg based on quality.Five liters of Rupchanda brand canned soybean oil was selling at Tk 485, Rupchanda (two litres) at Tk 188, and loose super palm oil at 78 per liter, sugar price at Tk 58 to 65 per kg and molasses at Tk 70 to 120 and flattened rice at Tk 70 to 90, the red lentil at Tk 130 per kg, while the imported lentil at Tk 115 kg and mash at 110 per kg. The coarse rice was selling at Tk 32 to 34 per kg, Pyjam at Tk 40 to 42 kg, Nazirshail brand of rice at Tk 44 to 52 kg, Minicate at Tk 44 to 50 kg, Kattari bhog at Tk 75, Pillau rice (Badsha bhog) at Tk 90 to 120 kg and Kalijira at Tk 115 to 130 kg only. Coarse flour was selling at Tk40 per kg and a 2-kg packet at Tk 75. Green mango was selling at Tk 40 to 120 per kg, pineapple at Tk 20 to 40 per piece, watermelon at Tk150 to 350 as per piece and guava at Tk 80 to 120 per kg.
