Prices of daily necessities including vegetables have been soaring for the last few months. With no vegetable below 50 taka in the market, the price of rice in the retail market has gone up by 5 taka per kg.
Besides, prices of edible oil, sugar and garlic have gone up. However, prices of beef, fish, chicken, pulses and hot spices remained unchanged despite increase in the price of mutton. On the other hand, price of eggs has come down a bit.
The information was obtained by visiting various kitchen markets in the capital on Friday (October 2). In these markets, price of asparagus bean has gone up by 20 taka as per kg and being sold at 100 taka. Besides, per kg beans is being sold at 180 taka, carrots between 90 to 100 taka, eggplants between 80 to 110 taka and coriander leaves between 250 to 280 taka.
Moreover, per kg domestic cucumber is being sold at 90 to 100 taka, hybrid cucumber at 60 taka. Prices of balsam apple fluctuates between 60 to 70 taka, snake gourd 60 to 70 taka and rige gourd 60 to 70 taka per kg. Depending on the size, price of sweet bitter gourd stands at 70 taka and potato at 40 taka. Prices of pointed gourd and papaya ranges between 60 to 70 taka and 40 to 50 taka respectively.
Mamun Hossain, a vegetable seller at Mohammadpur Townhall Market, said prices are high as there is no current vegetable season. The supply of vegetables in the market has decreased. Prices are higher due to shortage of vegetables in the wholesale market as a result prices in the retail market has gone up as well.
Prices of pulses, sugar and edible oil have risen slightly. At present, per kg anchor pulses is being sold at 50 to 52 taka and local lentil pulses at 90 to 120 taka. Besides, open edible oil is being sold at 100 to 102 taka per liter and sugar is being sold at 65 per kg taka. Atash rice is being sold at 50 taka per kg, paijam at 47 taka, miniket at 56 taka, cumin miniket between 55 to 56 taka, Nazirshail at 55 taka and polao rice (open) at 95 to 100 taka.
Meanwhile, the prices of beef, fish and chicken have remained unchanged despite a slight increase in the price of mutton in the market. Mutton is being sold at 800 to 820 taka per kg and beef at 500 to 550 taka per kg. Per kg broiler chickens are being sold at 125 to 130 taka, layer chickens at 220 taka, golden chickens at 260 to 280 taka and domestic chickens at 550 taka. However, the fish market remains stable.
Although, the onion and ginger market remained steady, the price of garlic has gone up. In these markets, garlic is being sold at 100 to 110 taka per kg with an increase of 10 to 20 taka per kg. At present, onions are being sold at 90 to 95 taka per kg. Imported onions are being sold at 70-75 taka per kg. Price of Chinese ginger stands at 240 taka and Kerala ginger is being sold between 140-150 taka.
