Prices of vegetables, including onion, garlic and potato, have risen in retail markets in the port city from very beginning of the summer season. Vendors said a drop in their supply had led to the price rise at the end of the winter season.
Onions in different markets in the city on Friday sold at Tk 28-32 per kg up from Tk 25-28 last week.Imported onions sold at Tk 25 per kg. The price was Tk 22 last week.
Rabiul Islam, a retailer at the Chowkbazar, told that a short supply of local onions in wholesale markets was pushing up prices. He said retail price of potato, which was Tk 10-15 per kg only two weeks ago, was now Tk 15-20 per kg.Islam himself sold potatoes at Tk 14 per kg on Friday.
One kilogram of garlic sold at Tk 80 to Tk 100 on Friday. However, local garlic was out of stock in most shops.
At present, onions from the country’s Chuadanga, Faridpur and Pabna districts were selling at Tk, Tk 18-20 and Tk 20-22 per kg respectively in wholesale markets, while onions imported from India at Tk 19-20, he said.
Local garlic sold at Tk 25-30 per kg in the wholesale market, while garlic, imported from China, at Tk 58-62 but the impact of wholesale markets not affected in retail market. Regarding the increase in potato prices, a vendor said preservation in cold storage was helping to push up prices.
Meanwhile, different vegetables, including cauliflower, cabbage, tomato, gourd, bean and bhindi (ladies’ finger) are entering the markets at high prices.
They are selling at over Tk 50 per kg.Meanwhile the prices of the edible oil go up from this weeik by Tk.7-8 per kg.
