Price of vegetables, garlic marks rise

The price of most vegetables has increased in the city markets due to continuous rain and of Ramzan. The garlic price increased by nearly 15 per cent in the last seven days, traders of the city’s kitchen markets said.
Chickpea price increased sharply from the beginning of the current month, but it has now begun to decrease. Finer quality chickpea was selling at Tk 55-58, which was Tk 65-68 per kg seven days ago. The normal variety was selling at Tk 44-46 per kg on the day against Tk 55-56 per kg.
Fakhruddin, a retailer at Nawabganjbazar in the city, said finer chickpeas variety price fell to 1,940-1,960 per maund (37.32 kg) at Moulvibazar wholesale market on Saturday from Tk2, 240-2,260 three days ago.
He said normal quality chickpea was selling at Tk 1,650-1,670 per maund on the day, which was Tk 1,860-1,880 per maund two days ago.
Haji Shafi, President of Moulvibazar Dal Baboshayee Samity, the biggest platform of the pulse traders in the country, said the price earlier increased slightly for transport problems.
“We have enough stock now and I see no reason of anxiety,” he said. However, annual demand for chickpeas is now 0.18 million tonnes when the requirement for the month of Ramadan alone is 0.12 million tonnes, according to BDBS and Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) data.
With the declining of hot temperature, production of poultry birds has been increasing which has helped cut the price nearly by 7 per cent, retailers said. Broiler was selling at Tk 150-155 per kg on Friday, marking fall by Tk. 107 only per kg.
Pakistani variety price also fell by 10 per cent in a week, retailers said.Price of garlic remained static for last one month but it began to increase from Saturday.
Garlic (imported) was selling at Tk85-90 and Tk80-85 (local) per kg in the city kitchen markets on Saturday, a 15.0 per cent hike in a week. Ridge gourd, pointed gourd, sponge gourd, snake gourd, tomato, cucumber, okra prices increased by Tk5-6 per kg in last seven days.
Lentil price fell slightly and was sold at Tk100-102 per kg (finer quality) on Saturday against Tk106-108 per kg a week ago. Price of other major commodities including rice, milk, salt, sugar, edible oil, flour, spices (excluding garlic) and tea were static on Saturday compared with a week ago.
At Karwan Bazar fish market on Saturday, it was found that a big size of hilsha was selling at Tk 1200 per piece while a middle size at Tk 600 and small one at Tk 300 per kg. A big size pangas fish was selling at Tk 200 per kg while a small size at Tk 140, climbing fish at Tk 300-500, ruhit (small) at Tk 300-400 and big-size ruhi at Tk 400.
