Price of spices mark upward trend

The price of mostly consumed spices like cumin, cardamom, ginger and garlic has been soaring for last few days in the market despite adequate supply.
The prices of meat recipe went up by Tk 30 to Tk 400 per kilogramme on an average as Eid approaches, retail traders said.
The consumers blamed that the traders are increasing spice price for making additional profit.
But the wholesalers said both supply of all varieties of spices price is normal. So there can be no reason for the price rise.
The retailers on the other hand, accused the wholesalers of forming a syndicate and raised the prices to make some extra profit ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
The price of cardamom rose to Tk 1,800 per kg last week from Tk 1,400.
Cumin, another vital spice for meat recipe, saw a moderate price hike to Tk 370 per kg from Tk 340 last week.
The price of imported ginger was hiked to Tk 120 per kg yesterday from Tk 100 a week ago. The price of this item was Tk 50 to Tk 60 per kg at the beginning of August which started to go up  
from the second week of the month with a rise to Tk 90. Last week it was selling at Tk 120.
Imported garlic rose by Tk eight to Tk 10. It was selling at Tk 170 to 190 on Wednesday.
Price of imported onion was ranging between Tk 25 and Tk 30 per kg over the last one month, but local onion price went up by Tk6 to Tk 46 from Tk 40 at the beginning of this week.
Price of Soybean oil rose slightly by Tk one to Tk two per litre last month. The Rupchanda brand of Soybean is being sold at Tk455 per container of five litres whereas other brand at Tk440.
The traders said prices of imported onion, dry chili and tamarind remained unchanged due to the sufficient supplies in the market
Fine rice which is traditionally cooked during Eid ul-Azha sees a price hike from Tk 95 to Tk100 per kg last week.
The price of clove, black pepper, Joyfol are selling at high rate in the local market as its price is higher in the international market. The high import cost attributed to the price hike of ginger and garlic, market insiders added.
