Price of onion, a must item for Bengali kitchen has registered high for third time in Bagerhat district town and it’s all the 9 Upazilas as else where of the country. Price of the commodity shot up Tk.25 to Tk.30 by per kg, according to qualities. Locally produced onion is now being sold here at Tk.75 per kg as against Tk.50 only one week before while the imported Indian onion is now being sold in the local markets at Tk.70 to Tk.72 according to qualities as against Tk.40 to Tk.45 previously. Comparative price of low quality onion shot up Tk.30 by per kg. As result, consumers have beensuffering a lot of inconvenience in general and the commoners have been suffering inconvenience in particular.
Supply of all kinds of vegetables has fallen short in the local markets and consequently, price is abnormally high. Newly appeared cauliflower is selling in the markets at Tk.130 per kg while newly appeared bean (Seem) is selling at Tk.120 per kg. Newly appeared radish is selling here at Tk.60 per kg. Kakrol is selling here at Tk.50 per kg. Okra is selling at Tk.40 per kg. Lau (bottle gourd) is selling at Tk30 to Tk.100 or more per piece according to sizes. Price of green poppa and potato is comparatively low. They are selling at Tk.20 per kg.
Price of fish is also high in the local markets. Small hilsa is selling here at Tk.500 to Tk.800 per kg according to different sizes (below 500 grams).
Price of farm produced egg is within the purchasing capacity of the commoners. It is now being sold here at Tk.34 to Tk.36 per hally of four. But the locally produced egg is comparatively small in size and price is very high. It is now being sold in the local markets at Tk.39 or more per hally of 4.
The supply of local poultry is very scanty and consequently, price is very high. It is now being sold here at Tk.350 to Tk.400 per kg according to the different sizes. Price of broiler is comparatively low.
It is now being sold here at Tk.120 per kg while the price of farm produced red and white mother poultry and cock is high. They are being sold here at Tk.225 to Tk.250 per kg. Beef is selling here at Tk.500 or more per kg. Mutton is selling in the local markets at Tk.700 or more per kg. But the quality of mutton is reportedly not better.
