Prices of several commodities, including onion, eggs, lentil and ginger, have increased in Dhaka’s kitchen markets in the last one week.
However, prices of many other items, including, edible oil, fish and meat, remained stable.
A tour of kitchen markets on Friday revealed onion was selling at Tk 44-45, a rise by Tk 3-5 from previous Friday’s prices.
Prices of lentil per kg by Tk 5 to Tk 94-95 and ginger by Tk 10 to be sold at Tk 250-230.
Traders held price rise in India and rain responsible for the increase in rate of onion.
The government of India, which caters to a sizeable quantity of the demand for onion in Bangladesh, raised the export prices of the produce twice in June.
The government first increased its prices per tonne from $150 to $300 and later to $500.
The Indian government decision greatly impacted the prices of the commodity in Bangladesh, particularly during the month of Ramzan.
Shyambazar Agriculture Product Wholesalers Association President Md Sayeed told bdnews24.com transport cost had increased due to rains.
“Products are also rotting (due to rains). That’s why prices (of onion) have increased a bit. It’s not unusual,” he said.
Sayeed claimed that onion prices were comparatively low in Bangladesh than in ‘neighbouring countries’.
