Our Correspondent :
In spite of the assurance given by the government of huge stock of onion in Govt. go-downs, the price of onion did not come down in the Bagerhat district markets. Rather, the price of the commodity has increased Tk.15 to Tk. 22 per kg in the local markets within the last 24 hours. As a result, locally produced onion is now being sold here at Tk. 90 per kg as against Tk. 68 while the imported Indian onion is being sold at Tk.70 instead of Tk. 55 within the difference of 24 hours only.
Sardar Abdullah, a retail seller of the local market told this correspondent, we are purchasing local onion at Tk.85 per kg and Indian onion at Tk.65 per kg from the wholesalers and we are selling the same at Tk.90 and Tk.70 per kg respectively. He added there is no rush of the purchasers. Consequently, the sufferings of the people know no bounds.
But the prices of rice, garlic and other commodities remain unchanged. The prices of all kinds of vegetables show upward trend.
