Newly harvested local onions saw falling price in Dhaka city’s kitchen markets on Saturday.
However, stakeholders said, prices of many other essentials remained steady, at a higher level in most cases.
Price of the new onion declined in a range of Tk 3.0- Tk 5.0 a kilogram at the wholesale market and Tk 5.0- Tk 7.0 a kg at the retail level. The spicy item was selling at Tk 30-Tk 32 a kg at the wholesale market. Retail price of local onion was reported to be Tk 50- Tk 54 a kg, according to the Department of Agriculture Marketing. The newly harvested onions were selling at Tk 30-Tk 32 a kg at the wholesale level on Saturday compared to Tk 35-Tk 36 a kg on Thursday, said Akash, a vendor at Mohammadpur Krishi Market.
Prices of imported Burmese onion decreased to Tk 29 a kg at the wholesale level. Retailers were selling it at Tk 40 a kg.
Items such as flour, edible oil and sugar witnessed no remarkable change either, meaning that the previous higher level of prices continued on Saturday.
Prices of local ginger and garlic remained static. This correspondent was also told that boilers were selling at similar prices as before.
Prices of brinjals, pumpkins, bitter gourd, pointed gourd, newly harvested potato and green chili remained steady in the past few days.
The Department of Agricultural Marketing report showed that four pieces of eggs were selling at Tk 32-Tk 34. Accordingly, price of a kg local sugar was Tk 76- Tk 78 a kg, salt (packed) Tk 27- Tk 32 a kg, lentils Tk 105-Tk 113 a kg and flour (packed) Tk 39-Tk 41 a kg.
Red tomatoes were selling at Tk 47-Tk 55 per kg and broiler chickens at Tk 155-Tk 160 a kg, soybean oil was selling at Tk 143-Tk 145 a litre, garlic (local) at Tk 46-Tk 58 a kg, garlic (imported) at Tk 147-Tk 155 a kg, ginger (local) at Tk 69-Tk 78 a kg and ginger (imported) at Tk 84-Tk 96 a kg.
Beef was selling at Tk 551-Tk 571 a kg, the DAM report added.
Rasel (single name), a salesman at New Bismillah Broiler at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, said he was selling broiler chickens at Tk 180- Tk 185 a kg, the same level of price as witnessed on Friday.
Red eggs were selling at Tk 100 a dozen at the retail level in the same market.
A vegetable vendor there, Faruk (single name), claimed that prices of almost all vegetables remained unchanged on Saturday.
