The prices of daily commodities increased at the weekend on Friday to the dissatisfaction of the fixed income group of people of the city..
 After visiting several kitchen markets in the capital on the day, it was seen that the rates of the chicken and egg have hiked more.
The retailers blamed the short supply and opining of the hotel restaurant after lifting of the lockdown, while the suppliers held the retailers’ greed responsible for upward trend of price.
The price of broiler chicken has increased by Tk 20-25 per kg in a distance of one week while layer by Tk 20 and local Tk 20-30. Per kilo broiler chicken was selling at Tk 150-155, sonali at Tk 270-280, layer at 240-260 and country chicken at Tk 480-500.
On the other hand, per dozen farm eggs was selling at Tk 115, whereas one week earlier it was Tk 100-105.
Nurul Afsar, a resident from Hazipara went to buy some chickens at Rampura kitchen market and became astonished after hearing the rate of the chicken.
He said few days ago which we bought for Tk 240 increased to Tk 270. We felt puzzled to buy daily necessaries in the market. Almost all kind of products price have increased. Imran Hossain, a retailer of Bhai Bhai Broiler House in Shantinagar Bazar, said, “The price of all chickens has gone up. On the one hand, the number of chickens coming from the farm is insufficient, comparing with the demand.. “
Regarding the reason for the rise in chicken prices, he said, “Farmers have reduced production because there was lockdown for long. Various restaurants and hotels have been completely reopened due to the lockdown lifting.
“Fowl meat has high demand in the restaurants and hotels. Besides, various social events are also being organized. Due to these reasons, the demand for meat has increased.”
Omar Farooq, owner of Shahinur Hans House, a wholesale chicken shop in Kaptan Bazar, said that the price of wholesale broiler chicken was Tk 140, Sonali Tk 250 to Tk 260. Layer chicken Tk 200- 230 per kg.
He said, “There were inadequate number of chicken in store house, on the other hand the demand in the market has increased. Due to this, the price is going up. It will take another one and a half months for the new farms to start producing chickens, during which time the prices will go up. ”
On the other hand, the prices of pulses, oil, sugar and local ginger have also gone up in the market; however, the price of fine rice and imported ginger has come down ‘slightly’, shopkeepers said.
Imported Indian coarse lentils are selling at Tk 90-100 per kg, local at Tk 110-120 and Australian kangaroos at Tk 130-140 per kg. The price of pulses has gone up from Tk 4-10 per kg, traders said.
Open sugar is being sold at Tk 80 per kg and packet at Tk 85 per kg. Local ginger is sold at Tk 120-130 and Chinese at Tk 100 per kg. Palm oil loose is being sold at Tk 122-126 and Super at Tk 125-132 per liter. On the other hand, soybeans are being sold openly at Tk 135. Bottled soybeans are being sold at Tk 150 per liter and five-liter bottled soybeans at Tk 660- 715 depending on the company.
Abu Taher, owner of Taher Store in Rampura Bazar, said, “The price of pulses went up in the last few days and so rose price of sugar . I have heard that the price of oil has gone up, but the new price of oil has not come to us yet. But today (Friday) the price of ginger is a little higher, but the price of China is a little lower. “
He said, “Usually, the price of local ginger is lower than that of Chinese ginger in the domestic market, but this time it has been reversed. Ginger prices are lower because of timely imports. But the price of country ginger has increased by Tk 10-15 per kg. “
According to traders, the prices of fine rice Miniket and Nazirshail have come down by one to two taka per kg during the week. Miniket and Nazirshail are being sold at Tk 58-65. However, the prices of thick paijams, lata and sawrna rice remained unchanged.
