Prevention of overloading on launches, buses, trains urged

The National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR), six environmental and citizens’ rights Organizations on Friday urged the authorities to take necessary steps to prevent overloading of water vessels, buses and trains on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha and Sharodia Durga Puja.
In a joint-statement, the representatives of the right bodies stressed the need for conducting mobile courts on inter-district bus routes and inland water ways to check overloading and stop plying illegal, unfit and faulty motor vehicles and water vessels.
They also demanded tight security measures at launch and bus terminals, ferryghats, railway stations to ensure safe journey for the home-bound people who want to join festivals with the near and dear ones. Referring to the ‘Pinak-6’ disaster, they urged the government, specially shipping ministry, to ensure the vigilance of Army and Navy personnel on river ports, ferryghats and inland water ways in the coming Eid and Puja. NCPSRR convener Ashis Kumar Dey, Green Club of Bangladesh (GCB) president Nurur Rahman Selim, Council to Protect Passengers Rights of Bangladesh (CPPRB) president Tusar Rehman, member secretary of Poribesh-Sammato Basjoggo Dhaka Bastobayon Parishad Haji Mohmed Shahid, president of Citizens Rights Movement Major (rtd) Md Mofizul Haque Sarkar and president of Initiative For Peace (IFP) Arifur Rahaman are among the signatories to the statement.
