There is no alternative to preventing gender discrimination for reducing all sorts of violence against the womenfolk to enhance their socioeconomic and political empowerment for attaining sustainable national uplift.
Speakers said this at a views-sharing meeting organised here on Thursday for the representatives of different organisations involved with providing health, medicare and legal aid services to the female victims of repression and violence against them.
The Strengthening Household Ability to Respond to Development Opportunities (SHOUHARDO) – II Programme of CARE Bangladesh organised the meeting at Begum Rokeya auditorium in the city.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Government of Bangladesh extended financial assistance in organising the day-long views-sharing meeting.
The officials and representatives of different government and non-government organisations involved with providing health, medicare and legal aid services to female victims of repression, torture and violence participated in the meeting.
Programme Coordinator of SHOUHARDO-II Programme of CARE Bangladesh Subrata Kumar Saha delivered welcome speech narrating prevailing situation on violence against women, repression, social curses and superstitions in the society.
District Legal Aid Officer and Senior Assistant Judge Zannatul Lilifa Akhter Jahan, Medical Officer Dr Ruhul Amin, District Women Affairs Programme Officer Laila Akhter Banu, Representative of Legal Aid Centre Aminur Rahman Rubel and Member of District Mohila Parishad Marhamatunnesa addressed the meeting.
In their speeches, the speakers said that the womenfolk are being subjected to physical and mental torture and abuse as a result of the prevailing gender discrimination between men and women in the society.
Due to lack of awareness and gender disparity, unwanted incidents like divorce, dowry, child marriage, polygamy, rape, sexual harassment, acid attacks, murdering women, trafficking of women and ‘fatwabazi’ have been occurring in the society, they said.
They urged all concerned for engaging their coordinated efforts in creating adequate public awareness to prevent gender discrimination and pave the way for flourishing talent and leadership of women in ensuring their equal rights in every sphere of the society.
