Prevention of child marriage has become crucial to flourish latent talents and leadership of girl children to make them worthy citizen with equal rights for attaining the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Government officials, Notary Public, Judges and women rights activists expressed the view at a daylong advocacy workshop on “Prevent Child Marriage” held recently at the conference room of the Circuit House in Khulna. District Administration, Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives (LGRD), Bangladesh and UNICEF jointly organised the advocacy workshop under the programme of “Communication for Development” while Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Helal Hossain attended the workshop as the chief guest. Chaired by Deputy Director of LGRD Ishrat Jahan, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Ziaur Rahman, Additional District Magistrate Md. Yousuf Ali, Officer of UNICEF (Communication for Development) Khulna Umme Halima. Speakers discussed negative impacts of child marriage that shatters life of girl children hindering their education on way to become worthy citizen.
DC Helal Hossain said the government has already took massive programme for preventing child marriage to build a better society free from all sorts of violence against women and gender discrimination on way to achieve the SDGs by 2030. He suggested for involving adolescents, youths, government and NGO officials, public representatives, religious leaders and marriage registrars for proper implementation of the Act.
The chief guest urged all concerned for preventing child marriage through checking smart national identity cards and birth registration documents before registering a marriage to free the society from the menace.
