GAS explosion has become very common in the country nowadays. Even if someone escapes death, the victim has to suffer burn injury or loss of valuable organs. The authorities concerned still did not take any effective step to control such incidents. In the latest incident, seven people including a couple sustained burn injuries from an explosion at a gas cylinder shop in Khagrachhari town on Tuesday, newspapers reported. Of them, four critically injured were transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. A cylinder of the shop, in front of Youngster Club at Khabangpuria, exploded with a big bang leaving seven people of adjoining shops injured.
Not only that, at least 40 people were injured in gas cylinder blast during cooking at Bishwa Ijtema ground in Tongi on Friday. Of the injured, several were hurt when they were fleeing being panicked due to blast. The exact number of gas explosions in the last couple of years is not yet known. It seems that the authorities concerned are less interested about it amid increasing such type of incidents day by day.
In fact, the gas cylinder has become a symbol of panic nowadays. Any moment any cylinder can be exploded, it may be at house or in the vehicle. The CNG run vehicles must have their cylinders checked every five years, and should be replaced with new one if any flaw is identified; according to the CNG Policy 2005. Presently, there are about 525,000 CNG-run vehicles in the country, of them majority number is auto-rickshaw. But true is that, most of the cylinders are not checked properly in due time. As a result, the defected cylinders become moving live bombs.
On the other hand, the gas pipeline connection in many households or business farms did not given properly, or taken in an illegal way by quack technicians. For that reason, gas pipeline explosion has also become so frequent in the present days. The gas companies, including Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited, cannot avoid responsibility of this chaotic situation.
The Department of Explosives will also have to take full responsibility as to why and how the faulted gas cylinders are produced and marketed. The cylinder producers and importers must be accountable if they fail to supply cent percent safe cylinders.
