US acting Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration Simon Henshaw has assured that his country will keep continuing pressure on the Myanmar government to take back its displaced Rohingya nationals from Bangladesh.
“There will be more pressure until a fruitful solution over the Rohingya crisis. We’re [US] staying beside Bangladesh and we’ll stay beside Bangladesh in the future too,” the US Secretary said on Friday after visiting Rohingya camp at Kutupalong of Ukhiya upazila in Cox’s Bazar.
Led by Simon Henshaw, the 22-member US delegation also included Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labour Scott Busby, acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Tom Vajda and Director of the Office of Mainland Asia Patricia Mahoney, along with US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat.
During the visit, the US officials talked to the Rohingyas staying in the camp. Besides, they visited different schools established by International Organization for Migration and passed sometime with the displaced Rohingya children..
Our Cox’s Bazar Correspondent said Secretary Henshaw highly appreciated Bangladesh’s effort for giving temporarily shelter to around 700,000 forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals.
“Bangladesh has created an example in the world by showing its courage giving shelter to thousands of displaced Rohingyas. Besides, Bangladesh has also responded extremely well to this unprecedented humanitarian crisis,” he said.
Officials said the US delegation is also set to visit Myanmar where they will hold meetings with high government officials, diplomats, UN and NGO officials to get a solution over the ongoing Rohingya crisis.
The US team will seek permission from Myanmar authorities for allowing entrance of journalists and relief workers in Rakhine state. Besides, safe and honorable repatriation of Rohingyas will be in the agenda of their meetings, officials asid.
Earlier on Wednesday, the US delegation called on Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam at his office in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Shahriar expressed sincere gratitude for the strong political as well as humanitarian support of the US government on the Rohingya crisis during meeting with the US delegates.
At that time, the State Minister also highlighted the five-point proposal given by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly in September and requested for the continuation of US support in this regard.
The US Secretary assured the State Minister of support from the US government, both financial and diplomatic, for the safe, sustainable and dignified repatriation of the Rohingya refugees. Both the sides agreed to continue pressure on the Myanmar government in this regard.
