President urges countrymen to celebrate birth centenary of Bangabandhu

President Md Abdul Hamid on Thursday called upon the countrymen to come forward to commemorate the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman this year and the golden jubilee celebrations of the country’s great independence in 2021. In a message on the eve of beginning of the countdown of Bangabandhu’s birth centenary celebration, the President extended his heartfelt thanks and best wishes to the countrymen and all the Bangladeshis living abroad. He also remembered with profound respect and gratitude the greatest Bangalee of all times, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at whose call the people from all rank and file joined the Liberation War. “We achieved independence through nine-month bloody war under the able leadership and direction of Bangabandhu. The celebration of his birth centenary is a glorious event in our national life,” he said. President Abdul Hamid said the 10th January is the Homecoming Day of the architect of the country’s independence Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. On this day in 1972, he said, the Father of the Nation returned to independent and sovereign Bangladesh after 9 months and 14 days of imprisonment in Mianwali Jail in Pakistan.
“Though we achieved ultimate victory on December 16, 1971 through armed struggle but the true essence of victory came into being upon returning home of the Father of the Nation,” he said.
The President said this year the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation will be observed throughout the country with due respect. He said the countdown of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu from January 10, 2020 bears great significance in this context, he added.
