President Abdul Hamid on Tuesday unveiled the cover of a book titled ‘Gono Parishad Theke Nobom Jatiya Sangsad’ (From Constituent Assembly to Ninth Parliament).
The President launched the book written by former Deputy Speaker Col (retd) Shawkat Ali, MP, at a function at Bangabhaban. Abdul Hamid thanked the author for writing such an important book, saying this is very suitable for parliamentary democracy. “This book will be helpful for the newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to know about the activities of parliament and their responsibilities,” he added.
The President said the book will also help the present and future generation know about the history and background of the 1970 election, constituent assembly and formulation of the constitution.
Shawkat Ali depicted his experience as a member of parliament in the 336-page book published by Agamee Prakashani. It also contains the list of names of all members of the Constituent Assembly.
Shawkat Ali was deputy speaker of the 9th parliament while President Abdul Hamid was its Speaker.
He was elected MP in the second parliament in 1979, fifth parliament in1991, seventh parliament in 1996, eighth parliament in 2001, ninth parliament in 2008 and in 10th parliament in 2014.
Writer Shawkat Ali, Publisher Osman Gani and writer’s son Dr Khaled Shawkat Ali also spoke on the occasion.
Later, newly appointed ambassador of Bangladesh to Iraq AMM Forhad made a courtesy call on President Abdul Hamid. During the meeting, the President asked the envoy to work for the welfare of Bangladeshis working in Iraq. President’s press secretary Joynal Abedin briefed reporters after the meeting.
Abdul Hamid said Iraq will need huge manpower for rebuilding its economy and directed the ambassador to continue his efforts so that Bangladesh can utilise the scope.
