President thanks police for restoring peace in public life

President Abdul Hamid on Saturday thanked all police personnel for restoring peace and relief in public life by facing recent unfavorable situation with professionalism and patience.
“Peace and relief have returned to public life. Confidence in the rank and file of police force has also increased.I would like to thank you,” he said while addressing a gathering of top ranking police officers at Bangabhaban marking’Police Week-2014′. President Abdul Hamid said incidences of violence took place in different areas in the country after execution of verdict of war crimes tribunal and centering the 10th national election. “I am paying tribute to sincere police personnel who sacrificed their lives to keep peace and discipline by thwarting these violent incidents,” he said.
The President said the main feature of a democratic police is to make an effective bridge between police and people. “We have to remember that the state and people were in contradicting positions under colonial police system. Coming out from this idea, it is your responsibility to build a modern, people-oriented and service-oriented police system,” he said. President Abdul Hamid asked the police members to give special attention so that the helpless people, seeking aid of police, would not be harassed in any way.
“Especially you have to be sensitive towards women and children. You have to do your responsibility by upholding basic human rights and democratic values of people in the light of holy constitution.
Noting that presently militancy is under control in the country, the President said “you have shown praiseworthy success in controlling militancy in the past.”
President Abdul Hamid asked police forces to be always aware and vigilant so that terrorism and militancy would not be able to regain in the country. The president said the world now became a global village due to globalization and it also influences the trend of crime.
“Day by day, you have to face new kinds of offense including cyber crimes, terrorism and militancy,” he said and observed that use of information technology needs to be increased side by side with traditional technique in controlling new trend of crimes. Noting that Bangladesh police has the highest number of members in the UN Peacekeeping Missions, the President said police personnel including the women members have increased image of Bangladesh in the international arena by playing successful role in the UN peacekeeping missions with professionalism. The President said the present government is committed to build a technology based time befitting modern police force. “The government is very active and vigilant to resolve your existing problems as well as increase benefits,” he said.
State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan, Home Ministry senior secretary CQK Mustaq Ahmed and IGP Hasan Mahmud Khondoker, among others, were present on the occasion.
