Observing that it has become tough to maintain discipline and solve the problems of overpopulated capital Dhaka, President Abdul Hamid on Sunday stressed coordination among government agencies, including city corporations, for its development.
The President said this when newly elected mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Annisul Huq and its councillors met him at Bangabhaban.
Abdul Hamid said, it is very difficult to maintain discipline and solve the problems of Dhaka, an overpopulated city. “But, if we can implement the plans taken for the development of the capital then the situation will improve,” he added.
The President emphasized coordination among government agencies, including city corporations, which are involved in development of the capital. Hamid underscored the need for creating public awareness about issues like waste management and water-logging. “One who doesn’t dare to spit out on the streets of Singapore, his or her character gets changed once s/he lands at the airport in Dhaka…not only the uneducated persons but also the educated people do the same.”
Abdul Hamid urged the mayor and councillors to work with a service-oriented mentality rising above personal interest. “This is not possible to be successful if you think only about personal interest. No one forces you to join elections. You do that voluntarily with a mentality to serve people. You can go a long way if you have the service-oriented mentality,” he said.
The Mayor highlighted the different activities and future plans of the DNCC. Annisul said, “Our main challenge is to develop a waste management system and remove water-logging from the capital. We have taken steps in this regard. “
“We’re taking decisions with the participation of all councillors. Even we’re discussing with civil society members and various professionals to seek advice,” he added. The mayor said his corporation is planning to introduce President Award for the best councillor, best ward and best citizen.
Secretaries concerned to the President office and high officials of the city corporation were present at the meeting.
