President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have greeted the countrymen and the Buddhist community, on the occasion of Buddha Purnima, the biggest religious festival of the Buddhist community. In separate messages on the eve of the day, they wished peace and happiness for all on the occasion.
In his message, President Abdul Hamid said Goutam Buddha, the proponent of Buddhism, is the symbol of peace and humanity. He had struggled throughout his life to develop a peaceful abode for the mankind.
The President said Buddha would remain memorable forever for setting glorious examples of serving the distressed and doing welfare to them.
His (Buddha’s) efforts for creation of friendship among the people and love for creatures inspire all, he said adding that his teachings are still equally applicable to build an ideal and knowledge-based society.
“Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony,” the President said and hoped that followers of all faiths in the country would make more contributions from their respective positions in building the nation and country.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said Gautam Buddha used to foster equality, friendship, sacrifice, mercy and non- violence throughout his life.
“He preached the message of peace,” she added. The Prime Minister said Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony where all citizens can practise their respective religions freely.
The Buddhist community has also been contributing to the socio- economic development of the country for ages, she added. She called upon all to work together for nation building being inspired with the message of peace preached by Goutam Buddha.
