They wished success of the International Mountain Day to be observed in the country tomorrow as elsewhere in the world.
They said the day’s theme ‘Promoting Mountain Products’ is very much time-befitting.
In his message, President Abdul Hamid hoped that observance of the day would increase awareness about the livelihoods and culture of the hill regions of Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said about one-tenth people of the world live in mountain areas.
She hoped that all member states of the United Nations would come forward for the development of the backward hill people facing the risks of climate change impacts, poverty and inadequacy of food.
The Prime Minister said her government has taken various steps to improve life standard of the hill people.
Radical changes have taken place in education, power, mobile phone network and other sectors in hill areas, she added.
The singing of Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord by the Awami League government in 1997 for sustainable development earned appreciation at home and abroad, Hasina said.
He also hoped that the day would play a role in improving the standard of lives to cope with the adverse impacts of climate change.
The President said the demand of quality products from hill areas, including coffee, coco, honey and spies, is increasing in the regional and global market.
