President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday expressed their hope that the country’s leading medical university BSMMU will play more significant role to flourish education and research in medical science to contribute to further development of health sector.
They came up with the hope in separate messages issued on the eve of founding anniversary and 20th University Day of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
They greeted all teachers, physicians, nurses, officials and employees marking the day.
The President, in his message, said since the inception of BSMMU, it has been playing a unique role in the field of higher research on medical science and providing healthcare.
Abdul Hamid said because of its vast contribution to education, research and treatment, the fame of the university drew the attention in the international arena surpassing the national circumference.
He said changes are taking place in medical science everyday because of research, invention of causes of new diseases and, application of information technology.
The President urged the country’s physicians to know the latest knowledge and technology in medical sector.
He said the countrymen have a lot of expectations from the BSMMU as a sole higher institution of medical science.
Abdul Hamid hoped the university would take proper initiatives to fulfill the people’s expectations.
He called upon the physicians to play more sincere and responsible role to build the country a happy and prosperous to materialize the dream of Bangabandhu.
The Prime Minister, in her message, said the greatest Bangalee of all time Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had put much emphasis on health sector to reform the war-torn newly independent Bangladesh.
“He has revived the ravaged health service in the country. In only three and an half years of his government’s tenure, Father of the Nation had taken massive programmes to reach the health service to the doorsteps of the rural people through infrastructural development and appointing doctors and nurses,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina said after assuming office in 1996, the Awami League government has taken various initiatives and started implementing those following the footsteps of Bangabandhu.
“In 1998, we established Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University first of its kind in the history of the country,” she said adding from the inception the medical university has been working to flourish higher education and to expand research in medical science and to provide world standard healthcare.
She said BSMMU has turned into a center of excellence in the field of health because of the government’s time befitting steps.
“Our government approved the ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Centre Based Super Specialized Hospital’ project,” she said.
The Prime Minister said two more medical universities have been established in Chittagong and Rajshahi.
“We have formulated a pro-people Health Policy and implementing it,” she said adding numbers of bed in hospitals, establishing of general and specialized hospitals and specialized health service have been increased a lot.
Sheikh Hasina said around 16.5 thousand community clinics and union health centers have been set up to reach the health services to the doorsteps of rural people.
