President Abdul Hamid leaves here for Istanbul on Monday on a three-day visit to attend a special conference of the OIC over Jerusalem issue.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam will also attend a meeting prior to the conference.
On Wednesday, Donald Trump formally recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, breaking with decades of US policy and defying overwhelming global opposition. Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali briefed the media here about the Bangladesh President’s visit to Istanbul on Sunday. Earlier, Turkish President Erdogan invited the leaders of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states to convene an extraordinary leaders’ summit in Istanbul on Wednesday over the Jerusalem issue. Erdogan called upon the OIC members to come together to display joint actions and coordination among Muslim countries.

Earlier, Bangladesh expressed deep concern at the recent announcement by the United States recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Bangladesh stressed preserving the legal status of Jerusalem within the framework of relevant UN resolutions, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry. Bangladesh reaffirmed its position in favour of establishing the State of Palestine on the basis of the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. Dhaka also urged all the parties concerned to take a pragmatic approach to the Middle East Peace Process in reaching a two-state solution for peace and stability in the region.
