President M Abdul Hamid on Tuesday asked the public servants to ensure transparency and accountability at all stages to make the ongoing development sustainable.
“Now the main objective of the administration is to serve the people . . . You have to ensure transparency and accountability at all stages,” the President said.
The head of the state was addressing a function to distribute the Public Administration Medal-2019, on the occasion of National Public Service Day, at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) here.
The President asked the employees of the republic to develop a relation of trust between the public servants and the people, and to perform their duties with the attitude of serving the people.
Develop trust in people’s mind so that the service-seekers can get necessary government service without any lobbying, Abdul Hamid advised the public servants. He urged the deputy commissioners (DCs) and other grassroots-level officers to perform their works in such a way that the people can consider them their friends.
The President stressed on creating mass awareness so that no opportunist can take undue benefits by creating instability over different social issues.
“You have to build tremendous awareness also at the grassroots in this regard,” he added. Noting that “The administration is for the people but people are not for the administration”, he said the government employees will have to use their talents and make sincere efforts in their respective works to build a developed Bangladesh.
Their (govt employees) role in formulating and implementing any development plan is very significant, the President said, adding, “Give priority to the public interest while selecting the projects.”
Public Administration Ministry organized the function with its State Minister Forhad Hossain, MP, in the chair. Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Administration Ministry HN Ashiqur Rahman, MP, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam and Ministry of Public Administration Secretary Faiz Ahmed, among others, spoke on the occasion. Cabinet members, senior secretaries and secretaries of different ministries, high military officers and heads of different government offices attended the function.
The government introduced the Public Administration Award in 2016 to recognize and encourage the public administration employees for showing their excellence in the services.
A total of 45 government officials and two organizations at the national and district levels received the Public Administration Award-2019 this year. Referring to state programmes to celebrate the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 2020 and the ‘Golden Jubilee of Independence’ in 2021, President Hamid directed the government employees to take the two events to a new height. The President called upon the government officials to work sincerely to materialize the Vision-2021 and Vision-2041, earlier dreamed by the Father of the Nation, the greatest Bengali of at time.
