President Abdul Hamid on Tuesday urged the people of the country to be conscious about those who cut down trees in the name of political programme.
“It is unfortunate but true that some people indiscriminately cut down trees in the name of political programme, which is not acceptable under any circumstances. So, people will have to be conscious about them,” he said.
The President said this while addressing a programme of tree plantation at Bangabhaban as part of the national tree plantation campaign and tree fair-2015. He also planted a sapling of Daruchini (Cinnamon) at Bangabhaban compound.
Citing the problems caused by climate change are a serious threat to all countries both rich and poor, Abdul Hamid said, “Internationally concerted effort will have to be taken in this regard and people will have to be informed about the problems caused by climate change and also about their responsibilities in this regard.”
He urged the people irrespective of religion-caste-profession to build greeneries through tree plantation in rural and urban areas to face climate change.
There is no alternative to industrialization for employment and also for the socio-economic development, the President said, adding “But environment pollution issue has to be addressed with importance while setting up factories”.
Environment and Forest minister Anwar Hossanin Manju, Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, among others, addressed the function.
