Kishoreganj District Administration, POPI and BRAC jointly arranged a rally, discussion, art competition and fire service life saving rescue exhibition marking the International Day for Disaster Reductionyesterday.
A discussion meeting on ‘Wealth Safe, wealth’ was held at Collectorate Conference Room on Saturday.
DC Md. Sarowar Morshed Chowdhury attended as Chief Guest while ADC (General) and DS Tarafder Md. Akhter Jamil in the chair.
Additional Police Super Md. Shafiqul Islam and ADC (Education & ICT) Abdullah Al Masud were attended as special guests.
It was address among others by DRO Md. Mobarok Hossain, NDC Md. Shariful Islam, Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service & Civil Defense Md. Dulla Miah, BRAC District Manager Bazlur Rashid.
DC Md Sarowar Morshed Chowdhury said that Bangladesh is one of the most disastrous countries, especially in earth quake . We are not free from earth quake’s risks. It destroys life as well as houses and infrastructures.
The government is implementing a number of effective measures to reduce different natural calamities.
A colourfull rally was brought out in the town marking the International Day for Disaster Reduction.
Fire Service and Civil Defense arranged a display at Govt Gurudayal College playground in the morning.
BSS from Rajshahi adds: Administrative officials and development activists at a post-rally discussion here yesterday mentioned adequate and time- fitting prior-preparedness can be the vital means of reducing losses of life and assets caused by disasters and other natural calamities.
They stressed the need for public awareness and modernised training for substantial reduction of the disaster related economic losses.
District Administration and District Relief and Rehabilitation Office organized the discussion at Government Madrasha Conference Hall in observance of the International Day for Disaster Reduction. “Reducing Economic Losses” was the main theme of the day.
Earlier, a colourful rally was brought out from the office premises of Fire Service and Civil Defense and ended at the meeting venue after parading some city streets.
Large number of government and non-government officials, NGO personalities, civil society members and journalists took part in the rally carrying placards to create awareness among the people about how to reduce disaster risk.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Alamgir Kabir, Additional District Magistrate Nasima Khatun, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Aminul Haque, District Information Officer Md Shamsuzzaman and Chief Executive Officer of CCBVO Sarwar-E-Kamal addressed the meeting.
The discussants viewed the rate of disaster risks is gradually mounting due to various reasons. So, there is no alternative to collective efforts of all government and non-government organizations concerned to reduce thelosses.
They elaborated the adverse impacts of climate changes to the habitations, livelihoods, environment, irrigation, navigation, ecology, biodiversity, weather and underground water levels.
They urged the civil society, non-government agencies and the private sector to join hands in government’s efforts for increasing national disaster resilience.
