Security beefed up in dists: Preparations afoot to celebrate Durga Puja

The artisans are passing busiest time as preparations nearing completion to celebrate the five-day Durga Puja, the greatest religious festival of the Sanaton community, with due religious fervour in Rangpur Division.
Beginning from October 4, the festival will end on October 8 next through celebration of the ‘Bijoya Dashami’ with immersion of the idols of goddess Durga, local leaders of Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad (BPUP) and officials said.
Deputy Inspector General of Bangladesh Police for Rangpur Range Devdas Bhattacharya informed that Durga Puja will be celebrated peacefully at all 5,221 mandaps, excluding Rangpur metropolis, in all eight districts of Rangpur division amid tight security.
“Adequate number of members of police forces along with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-13), Highway Police, Ansar-VDP and community police will be deployed to ensure peaceful celebrations of Durga Puja everywhere,” Devdas said.
Talking to BSS, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Abdul Alim Mahmud said the Sanaton community will celebrate ‘Sharodiya’ Durga Puja at 164 mandaps in the metropolis this year.
“We have taken ample security measures to ensure peaceful celebrations of the greatest religious festivity of the Sanaton community at all Puja mandaps located under jurisdictions of Rangpur Metropolitan Police,” he added.
Like in all eight districts of Rangpur division, Rangpur Police Super for Biplob Kumar Sarker said adequate steps have been taken to assist the Sanaton community in celebrating the Durga Puja festivity peacefully in eight upazilas of Rangpur.
Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur Md. Asib Ahsan said a record number of 952 Durga Puja mandaps (938 mandaps last year) have been erected this time in all eight upazilas, Rangpur metropolis and three municipalities in the district.
“We have started distribution of 476 tonnes of rice with 500 kg among each of the 952 mandap authorities across the district to assist the Sanaton community in celebrating the Durga Puja festivity in a befitting manner,” he added.
Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram Sultana Pervin today told BSS that the district administration already distributed 500 kg rice among each of the 499 Puja mandaps erected in all nine upazilas of Kurigram district.
“The district administration has also extended assistance to authorities of different Puja mandaps damaged by recent flood for repairing those and erecting idols of goddess Dura there to celebrate the Durga Puja festivity in Kurigram,” Pervin added.
Talking to BSS, artisans Anil Kumar Paul, Shyamol Dutta, Adyta Sen, Manoranjan Paul and Amrita Paul at different Puja mandaps in the city said they are passing busiest time to complete coloring of the idols of goddess Durga with artistic creativity.
They said their artisan groups started erecting the idols of goddess Durga at 30 Puja mandaps in the city adjoining areas since last month this year.
“After completing all major works, we are giving finishing touches to the idols with different colours to make those more charming and eye-catching in looks,” said Shyamol Dutta.
Artisan Raj Kumar and Shushanto Karmaker said they have erected six mandaps in Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur and are giving finishing touches and charming colours to the idols of goddess Dura to make those more attractive.
Hakimpur upazila Chairman Harun Ur Rashid and President of Hakimpur upazila unit of BPUP Suman Kumar Mandal said adequate steps have been taken for ensuring peaceful celebrations of the Durga Puja at all mandaps in the upazila.
Similarly, artisan Mithu Malakar of Boidder Bazar area in Rajarhat upazila of
Kurigram said his group of artisans has erected 30 sets of idols of goddess Durga in the upazila at the rate of Taka 12,000 to Taka 15,000 per set of idols.
“We are working round the clock to give finishing touches with colour works to make the idols more attractive,” said Mithu adding that a total of 111 Puja mandaps have erected idols of goddess Durga in Rajarhat upazila this year.
Divisional Commissioner KM Tariqul Islam said the district and upazila administrations and law enforcement agencies have taken adequate security steps for ensuring peaceful celebrations of Durga Puja in the division.

It was addressed among others by Additional Police Super (Promoted SP) Nazmul Islam, District Puja Udjjapon Porished President Adv Dolon Bhowmik, Prof Pranash Kumer Chowdhury, Prof Rabindranath Chowhdury, Trushti Lipu Roy, District Press Club President Mostafa Kamal, CAB President Alam Sarowar Tito, Sanak President Saiful Hoque Mollah Dulu, Journalist Sakauddin Ahammed Rajon and District Anser Adjutant.
At least 405 Puja mandaps would be brought under the security blanket of Police, RAB, Ansar, Armed Police, DB and other intelligence agencies will stay inside the procession in plain clothes to fend off any trouble. CCTV surveillance systems will be installed in important Puja Mandop as a pant of the security measures. The law enforcers will also remain alert to detect eve teasers.
S.P noted that devotees will have to enter the Puja Mandops though archway and their bodies will be searched. No bags, sharp weapons and flammable substances will be allowed to carry while entering mandaps. Use of fireworks and crackers have already been prohibited.
Police Super Khaled also urged the Puja arrangement committee leaders to install close circuit cameras and metal detectors in the mandaps.
To avoid any unwanted incidents, Administration will deploy Additional Police, RAB forces on this day.
BSS from Gaibandha says: Almost all-out preparations have been completed to hold 5-day long Durga Puja, the greatest religious festival of the Hindu Community, from Monday in the district with due religious fervor,gaiety and solemnity.
President of District Puja Celebration Parishad Ranajit Bakhshi Surjwa said a total of 607 Puja mandaps have been erected in all the seven upazilas in the district this year.
Of the total, some 101 mandaps have been erected in Sadar upazila, 131 in Sundarganj upazila, 126 in Gobindaganj upazila, 108 in Sadullapur upazila, 61
in Palashbari upazila, 66 in Shaghata upazila, and 14 in Fulchhari upazila of the district, he also said.
After visiting different Puja mandaps in the district town it was seen that the artists (Malarkars) were giving last finishing and final touches to
the images of deities to make the idols very attractive and nice looking to the devotees and the visitors.
Hundreds of Hindu Community people of all ages are rushing to the markets and purchasing Puja clothes to celebrate their greatest religious festival
from tomorrow with much enthusiasm and religious fervor.
The whole district has taken a festive look and the devotees are getting ready to welcome the upcoming event with great enthusiasm. The festival will
conclude on October 08 through the immersion of the idols after celebrating the Bijoy Dashami.
Initiative has also been taken to provide uninterrupted power supply to the puja mandaps at nights to enable the Hindu devotees in offering their puja
prayers, archana, kirtons, arati and other religious rituals, said an engineer of power development board.
Superintendent of police (SP) Muhammad Towhidul Islam said full-proof security measures have been taken in and around of all the Puja mandaps of
the district by the law enforcing agencies to ensure a peaceful atmosphere for holding the Puja festival smoothly.
Police, Ansar and VDP members including gram police would be deployed at the Puja mandaps each and the elite forces RAB would also patrol on the road to hold the Puja here smoothly, the SP also said.
Stern and lawful action would be taken against the persons who would be involved in creating anarchy and trouble at the time of Puja, the SP warned.
Talking to the BSS acting deputy commissioner (DC) Rokhsana Begum said several vigilance teams headed by additional deputy commissioners and UNOs had also been formed to help the community celebrate the festival in a befitting manner.
Control room has been opened at the office of the deputy commissioner here side by side with seven upazila headquarters each to watch the law and order situation in all the Puja mandaps, the acting DC also said.
The government had allocated 303.50 tonnes of rice for the Puja mandaps to help assist the Hindu Community to celebrate the Durga Puja with festive mood, the acting DC added.
