State minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Sunday said, the country’s power generation capacity has touched 12000 MW. Now pre-paid meters are needed to reach electricity to every household.
“Though we have been trying to develop pre-paid meter system for a long time, the progress is not remarkable”, the minister said it while addressing a workshop at Bidyut Bhaban on pre-paid meter system for power sector employees.
He encouraged private sector to produce pre-paid meters, as government could not do alone every thing for the citizens.
The country’s entire power distribution system will be brought under prepaid metering system by 2021,
With Power Cell Director General Mohammad Hossain in the chair, the function was also addressed by ADB Country Director Kazuhiko Higuchi, and Power Secretary Monwar Islam.
Nasrul Hamid said, the country has come out of load shedding hazard. “Now our concentration is on improving the customer service.”
He said, the government has planned to generate 24,000
MW of electricity by 2024 of which a big portion will come from coal-fired power plant. “So, our major challenge will be to set up coal-fired power plants in future.”
In the workshop, a number of case studies were presented by different power distribution agencies, including PDB, REB, DPDC, and DESCO, on prepaid metering. The Power Cell organised the workshop.
