Prepaid meter to save 33 cubic meter gas from each double burner

With installation of prepaid meter for
domestic use of natural gas, approximately 33 cubic meter gas would be saved from a double burner oven per month.
“We have a plan to introduce prepaid meter for all gas burners in the country against monthly billing system, aimed at stopping misuse of natural gas,” state minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid. reports BSS.
He said the government has undertaken an initiative to install 2,68,600 prepaid meters at residential areas across the country, of which 13,100 have already be installed at Mohammapur and Dhanmondi areas under Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited.
“The government under different projects will install prepaid gas meters to prevent wastage of gas during its use at different holdings. Our mission to achieve energy security and supply of sustainable energy for all at affordable prices,” Nasrul said.
He said consumers of the natural gas under these projects would get more financial benefits by using the prepaid meters, compared to their use in the previous system.
According to Titas gas company officials, the state owned Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited (TGTDCL) has targeted to install 2 lakh prepaid meters at Banana, Uttara, Baridhara, Gulshan and Mirpur.
In this regard, a contract was signed on Thursday with a Japanese firm Toyo Keiki Company Limited for installation of the prepaid meters with Taka 389 crore.
Company secretary of the TGTDCL and director of the Toyo Keiki Company Limited signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides aimed at completing the installation works in 950 days. The prepaid meters would be installed under the 35th ODA loan package of the Japan government.
Besides, installation of 60,000 prepaid gas meters is under implementation in Chittagong under Karnaphuli Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited.
Natural gas is Bangladesh’s main energy source and a major driver of economic growth, providing nearly 75 percent of total primary energy consumed.
However, the state minister said the government under dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has undertaken a series of measures to augment energy production in ensuring the country’s energy security.
