Leftist student front Chhatra Union will form a ‘brigade’ to prevent sexual harassment of women as such incidents continue to rise in Bangladesh.
It also demanded an apology from the police chief for his remarks on the Apr 14 sexual assault at Dhaka University.
Chhatra Union, at a media conference on Saturday, named its General Secretary Lucky Akter, who raised slogan shouting to a new high at Shahbagh in 2013, as convenor of the ‘Preetilata Brigade’.
Its President Hasan Tarek said the brigade was being formed to protest against sexual harassment.
“There have been many sexual assaults on women in recent days… We’ll set up ‘Preetilata Brigade’ at all educational institutions to resist sexual harassment,” he said.
This brigade has been named after Preetilata Waddedar, one of the leading figures of armed anti-British movement in Chittagong that culminated in the famous armoury raid in the 1930s.
Chhatra Union has planned a campaign to collect signatures from one million people to protest sexual assault. The 15-day programme will start from May 18.
The student front has been organising various programmes protesting against harassment of women at Dhaka University’s TSC on the Bangla New Year.
Police dispersed their march with much force on May 10 when they went to lay siege on the Dhaka Metropolitan Police headquarters protesting against Apr 14 assault at DU.
Faced with severe criticism, police formed committees to investigate the incident.
The High Court has asked police about measures taken against those responsible.
